At least once a month, in my effort to stay informed about what's happening in the Great Lake State, currently governed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, I like to check in to see what's going on in and around the state.
Now, being a lifelong resident of this beautiful region, I feel an obligation to you, the readers of RedState, that this is the least I can do.
No need to thank me...
With Governor Whitmer, though, I could probably produce a couple of stories a week just on her state, and through the rest of her term, I would likely have stories left over that I could produce and post here.
Once again, no need to.... oh, never mind.
From the Detroit News:
A semiconductor project that state officials hoped would bring thousands of jobs to Genesee County is now off the table after months of behind-the-scenes work by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's administration.
State leaders had described the project as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" for Michigan, a state that long attempted to diversify its economic base beyond the automotive sector. Whitmer, a second-term Democrat, had prioritized bringing the Sandisk Corp. semiconductor fabrication facility to Mundy Township.
But in a Wednesday statement, the governor said due to "massive economic uncertainty at the national level," the project wouldn't move forward anywhere in the United States.
Wonder what could have happened.
State Rep. Jasper Martus, D-Flushing, said the economic development project would have been transformational for Genesee County and one of the largest in recent Michigan history.
Whitmer had dedicated every waking moment to trying to bring the facility to Michigan, but economic uncertainty and delays in federal approvals had derailed it, Martus said.
Oh.
"This was a once-in-a-generation opportunity," Martus said. "Donald Trump killed the future for my community.”
Hold on a second...
Sandisk had been pursuing financial incentives from the federal government. That pursuit began when Democratic President Joe Biden, who sought to bring semiconductor production to the U.S., was in office and continued into the Republican president's new term.
Well, how about that...
So a Democrat gives a little pat on the head to the Governor and FORMER president, but rags on the current president of the opposite party for doing what Democrats have normally done?
Am I reading that correctly?
I'm not going to lie, I had to reread this story two or three times to figure out exactly what happened. Governor Whitmer met Trump just a little over a month ago at Selfridge Air National Guard base to welcome the expansion of said base. However, a fellow Democrat in the state is now ragging on the president for doing what Democrats have traditionally done, which is throw money and tax breaks at businesses for locating in their territory.
Right!?!?!?!
Right.
This gets confusing for moi.
National and state leaders should be working in conjunction with each other to bring businesses to their areas. Generally giving as little (taxpayer) money away as possible.
However, I know that Representative Martus will have a slight meltdown, being that Donald Trump is the one who's arranging for this to happen. I understand that because Martus is a Democrat, and of course, Trump and his administration are mostly Republican. Yet you think they would have, for this project, put aside their differences and all gotten together in the same room and at least secretly typed out a deal that could work.
Not that I'm looking for lefties to get some wins here, but for cripes' sake, people, we need just a couple of victories in Michigan.
Michigan's job growth rate of 1.0% over the year is slightly behind the national average of 1.4%, according to a State of Michigan (.gov) report.
It would have been super duper if we could have added more jobs, even if it were done with a Republican president.
Trump, of course, will not be running again in 2028, and some people had a sliver of hope that possibly Whitmer would be on the Democratic side running for president or even for vice president.
But however...
Maybe next time, Gretch.
