The march to making middle America irrelevant continues on with the state of Nevada looking to become the 15th state to go with the National Popular Vote initiative. In case you need a refresher on what the NPV is here is a bit from their website…
The National Popular Vote interstate compact would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The bill ensures that every vote, in every state, will matter in every presidential election. The bill is a constitutionally conservative, state-based approach that preserves the Electoral College, state control of elections, and the power of the states to control how the President is elected.
They are being deceitful in saying this is conservative in anything.
According to NPR, Nevada is one step closer to adopting this disaster…
With a state Senate vote Tuesday, Nevada is close to becoming the latest state to sidestep the Electoral College when it comes to electing presidents.
According to the National Popular Vote organization, which oversees efforts to persuade states to join the compact, 14 states and the District of Columbia have agreed to pledge their 189 electors to the winner of the national popular vote — regardless of which candidate won the state. Nevada, with its six electoral votes, would bring the total to 195. Once 270 electors are pledged, the compact would kick in.
What the NPV does do is to ensure that the West Coast and the East Coast ( California, New York, New Jersey) have a much greater say than who gets elected than Missouri, Iowa or Montana. This does not guarantee every vote is counted in states like those or any state that goes against the popular vote. If Nevada votes for candidate X and the popular vote goes to candidate Z but Nevada throws their electors to Z, how does that represent the voters will in Nevada?
Simply, it doesn’t.
As I have written here before about this debacle of an idea Michigan GOP Plans Shredding The Constitution, And Trump, With National Popular Vote and Yuck: Colorado Decides To Bypass The Electoral College With National Popular Vote this is not what the founders intended.
From my previous article on Colorado passing this…
Here is the 2016 national vote.
Clinton 65,853,514
Trump 62,984,828
Difference 2,868,686
If the NPV were in place, then California, with Clinton’s win by 3,446,281 ( Source Politico) that would have decided the electoral votes of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin and any other state that voted for Trump. That is exactly the OPPOSITE of what the founders intended.
All a candidate for President would have to do is make sure that California, New York, and Florida were well-visited and occasionally drop in on the other states to say, “Hi.” As long as the voters in those large states voted the way they should, the electoral votes of all the NPV states go to that person.
That is nonsense.
The founders were well versed in what happens to democracies vs republics. California could decide every election from here until the end of time for the other 40 states and we would be stuck with it.
Currently, candidates have to make a run at a number of states to win the White House and they need to watch how the policies they advocate for effect those states while in office. This is not a perfect plan but it has worked wonderfully for the last 243 years. Just awarding electoral votes because of people in California and New York tipping the scale for the rest of us is not good for the nation as a whole.
Far from being a conservative idea, this is a progressive one and it is meant to deliver payback to make sure the GOP never wins another national election again as they did in 2000 and 2016. Just take a look at all the Democrats running for President supporting this idea. Is that a coincidence?
If you believe as I do that the founders set up a framework much better than today politicians would like too than you should oppose this in your state. If your legislators have already accepted start to fight to repeal it.
The flag of the United States of America and the republic for which it stands, is depending on it.
