As each year passes since the September-11-2001 attacks on America, one of my fears has been that the absolute horror of that day will begin to fade from the nations collective conscience. That seems to be happening as we speak.

Word came on Friday that the fund set up by the Federal government was slashing payments to those people who had qualified under the guidelines set up.

According to CBS News…

The 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund said Friday that it has “insufficient money” to continue paying out current and projected claims and will have to drastically reduce future payments. Nearly 40,000 people have applied to the federal fund for people with illnesses potentially related to being at the World Trade Center site, the Pentagon or Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after the 2001 terror attacks there, and about 19,000 of those claims are pending.

This is absolutely disgusting and heartbreaking.

We have all seen the video of what people went to do in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on 9-11. First responders rushing in to find survivors and just regular people walking around dazed and confused unprotected. The fund was set up to try and help alleviate some of the financial burdens for people who are suffering from a list of ailments. Breathing in the tons of smoke and debris from the World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and Shanksville, PA did damage to all those involved.

Possibly though, Congress will do the right thing ASAP and there is a sign of hope for that happening.

“This is devastating news to the thousands of sick and injured 9/11 responders and survivors who were promised, and have been counting on, being fully compensated for the losses they have suffered,” Democratic Reps. Jerry Nadler and Carolyn Maloney and Republican Peter King said in a statement.

The United States of America should honor its commitment to those that committed their lives and proved through their actions on that day and months after that they are heroes.

Let us never forget that or honor our commitment to them.
