Michigan Speaker Invites Trump To Deliver State Of The Union In Lansing

The President “shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.” Article II, Section 3, Clause 1.

The Constitution is not specific in where the President must deliver this.

In a grand example of thinking outside of the box, the newly minted Speaker of the Michigan House of Repreantives has invited president Donald Trump to Michigan to deliver the annual address in Lansing.

Well done.

According to the Detroit News

Michigan’s GOP House Speaker Lee Chatfield has invited President Donald Trump to deliver his State of the Union address in the House chamber of the state capitol.

The invite comes as the president faces opposition from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who requested a delay of the Jan. 29 speech normally held in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., for alleged security concerns during the partial federal government shutdown.

He also tweeted the official invitation to POTUS 45.

This is a really interesting idea and I’m not just saying that because I’m from Michigan.

We all know that Washington D.C. is broken. If you don’t know that you probably think those reruns of Jersey Shore are new. You also think that the people on Jersey Shore are role models.

While it is rare for a President to speak to a state legislature it is not unheard of. Getting outside of the bubble or swamp of the Washington area and delivering an update on the country from one of the 50 states would be great optics.

Also, Michigan is a must-win state in 2020.

Even though I’m a person that believes the Government is way too big, this shutdown has gone on long enough. The back and forth with the GOP and the Democrats are beginning to fray everyone in the country and it will start costing the economy. This is the one area President Trump cannot afford to mess with being it has been going gangbusters since his tax package passed.

Maybe getting outside of the Capitol in D.C. and rotating the State of the Union speech among the different state capitols would help the leader of the free world see the problems here at home more clearly.

I think it is worth a try.
