The Trump administration has come out swinging after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spent the weekend acting as if Canada was preparing for an all-out economic war with the United States. President Trump appears to have heard Carney's bluster and has decided to show the prime minister what an economic war with the U.S. might look like.
In a Monday morning post to Truth Social, the president said our neighbors to the north "has been ripping off the United States of America for years" through "their ridiculously high tariffs" that have "made life impossible" for U.S. farmers and their "farm products."
The "60 Billion Dollar" trade imbalance that exists between the two countries, wrote Trump, is no longer "sustainable," and, therefore, "Tariffs on all Cars, Trucks, both large and small, Automotive Parts, and Steel, will be increased to 50%" starting on January 1, 2027.

Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years. Their ridiculously high tariffs on our Farmers and farm products has made life impossible for these great American Patriots, and has long created a 60 Billion Dollar Deficit between our two Countries. Not sustainable, and NOT ANYMORE! On January First, 2027, Tariffs on all Cars, Trucks, both large and small, Automotive Parts, and Steel, will be increased to 50%. Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS. Canada will be treated like a State no longer! On Trade, and in other ways, also, they are among the worst Nations in the World to deal with. They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US! They do 95% of their business with the U.S., with us, the exact opposite! Thank you for your attention to this matter! President Trump is undoubtedly responding to this humdinger of a line dropped by Carney at a Saturday press conference: “You’re at war when you get attacked. We got attacked.”
This came from Carney's prepared remarks and wasn't just an on-the-fly answer to a question about tariffs and addressing trade imbalances. It now seems to be the official position of Canada that it's been attacked by – and is now at war with – the United States.
The PM also accused the Trump administration of making last-minute demands that were “uneconomic, unfair” and threatening to Canada's sovereignty. “They asked too much and offered too little,” said Carney.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer offered a somewhat different version of events during a Monday morning interview, revealing Canada had been offered "the best access to the United States of any country in the world" and that still wasn't good enough for them.

So, despite Carney's blustering, Canada actually wanted more than the best access America was willing to offer any country in the world and decided "war" was a better option. He might be rethinking his rhetoric come January 1.
