“This is how we’re going to kill your wife.”
That is just one of the chilling messages Freedom Caucus member Rep. Tom Garrett (R-Va.) has received in recent weeks. When the freshman congressman recently held a town hall meeting for 300 of his constituents, the room was crawling with security and his staff had to be extra vigilant that the rhetoric not get too out of hand.
It’s unclear why exactly Garrett and his family are being threatened. Republicans have been dealing with raucous town hall crowds for a few months stemming from House debate over the repealing and replacing of Obamacare. Basically, the anger shown in the endless marches and demonstrations since Trump took office has spilled over into constituent meetings and has escalated to physical threats.
Garrett has confirmed that Capitol Police, state police and intelligence officials “have deemed [the threats] to be credible and real.” He seems to be taking the threats in stride:
“I served in the military. I reconciled myself with the reality that one day I’m not going to be here,” Garrett continued. “I don’t want to die anytime soon. I got stuff left to do, I hope. But when you pull wives and children in, that’s not cool.”
Not cool at all.
The left loves to lecture the right on respecting the children and spouses of Democrat elected officials. Chelsea Clinton and the Obama girls were off limits. They, of course, do not extend this courtesy to Republicans, as has been shown through leftists like SNL writer Katie Rich mocking Barron Trump.
