Trump Hires a New Lawyer With a New Strategy

President Trump doesn’t just want Yes men in his Cabinet. He’s apparently also looking for them to staff his legal team, and that could be trouble, especially if they’re telling him what he wants to hear, as opposed to what he needs to hear.

Case in point: Joseph E. diGenova.

As has been suggested elsewhere, Trump feels his best strategy against the special counsel investigation is to attack. His legal team has suggested he chill out, specifically saying he should not attack Robert Mueller.

Trump isn’t looking for counsel. He’s looking for agreement, and somebody to “let Trump be Trump.”

He may have found his dream attorney in diGenova.

An appearance on Fox News may have sealed the deal.

“There was a brazen plot to illegally exonerate Hillary Clinton and, if she didn’t win the election, to then frame Donald Trump with a falsely created crime,” he said on Fox News in January.

“Make no mistake about it: A group of FBI and DOJ people were trying to frame Donald Trump of a falsely created crime,” said diGenova, who was previously a Republican-appointed United States attorney for the District of Columbia.

And just like that, Trump has the lawyer he wants.

That’s just the sort of baseless babble Trump wants to hear from his attorneys, whether it’s based in reality or not.

Trump went at Mueller and the probe for the first time, by name, this weekend, and again on Monday.

The test will be in seeing how well diGenova’s strategy gels with that of the rest of Trump’s legal team.
