WikiLeaks Founder Gets a New Country

I guess they just really want him off of their couch.

WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, has been hiding out in the Ecuador Embassy in London since 2012. He sought asylum there, in order to avoid extradition to Sweden for sexual assault charges.

Sweden eventually dropped those charges, but he’s not out of the woods. He still faces charges in Britain for jumping bail.

According to the Associated Press, however, things are starting to go his way.

Ecuador is cutting him a break.

The nation’s foreign minister announced Thursday that officials had decided to permit Assange’s naturalization while they look for ways to resolve his situation.

So he’s a citizen of Ecuador, now?

It appears so.

Britain’s Foreign Office said Thursday it had rejected Ecuador’s request to grant diplomatic status to Assange, who was born in Australia.

Because he’s not a diplomat. He’s pretty much just a hacker.
