I’m a little sick of these made up terms, like “fake news” and “deep state,” especially when used by public officials. It sounds ridiculous.
Florida Rep. Francis Toomey appeared on MSNBC this morning and gave his thoughts on the “deep state,” and specifically, the “deep state” presence within the FBI.
He spent some time talking about America’s high standards for government agencies (Dude, we elected Donald Trump), and somehow, the host refrained from laughing.
So is it his goal to carry water for Trump and discredit the Department of Justice and the FBI?
“I don’t want to discredit them. I would like to see the directors of those agencies purge it,” he replied.
And what would be the basis for the purge, if they’re doing their jobs?
“And say, look, we’ve got a lot of great agents, a lot of great lawyers here, those are the people that I want the American people to see and know the good works being done, not these people who are kind of the deep state.”
Define: deep state.
Further along he mentioned Peter Strzok, the FBI agent fired from Robert Mueller’s team back in July for sharing texts with his mistress, discussing Trump in a negative light.
I’ve said before that having a personal opinion is hardly an act of treason. The fact that he did it while on a team investigating the president complicated things. Mueller handled that when he fired him.
What Toomey, Trump, and the rest of the Trump faithful seem to believe should happen is that all personal emails and communications of intelligence or law enforcement agents and officials should be made public, all personnel purged and replaced with Trump loyalists, or the agencies shut down.
None of that is reasonable, rational, or sane.
Trump has spent the entirety of his first year as president in attack mode against the media, the GOP, or our nation’s intelligence agencies. Most recently, he’s cranked up the attacks on the DOJ and FBI, frustrated that the Russia probe is ongoing.
He focused his weekend attacks on Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, who announced he would be retiring in March 2018.
Trump has said the FBI’s reputation is “in tatters,” which McCabe and other officials deny.
Their morale, however, is said to be taking a hit, because they have an unappreciative, petulant Commander-in-Chief.
Is there any way to get out of this quagmire with anything resembling the nation we once were intact?
Trick question. If we were the nation we once were, the conditions wouldn’t have been there to usher in anything like a Trump presidency.
