Treacherous UN Security Council Propose Resolution Based on Recent U.S. Jerusalem Announcement

In this photo provided by the United Nations, members of the United Nations Security council vote at the United Nations headquarters on Friday, Dec. 23, 2016, in favor of condemning Israel for its practice of establishing settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. In a striking rupture with past practice, the U.S. allowed the vote, not exercising its veto. (Manuel Elias/The United Nations via AP)

Typical.

That den of vipers and thieves, the United Nations Security Council, is reportedly weighing a draft resolution aimed at the usual anti-Semitic bull they’ve come to be known for.

The resolution seeks to nullify any recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

It is a one-page text, drafted by Egypt and circulated among all 15 members of the council. It doesn’t mention President Trump or the United States, but it is no doubt related to Trump’s announcement that the U.S. recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

According to Reuters:

The council could vote early next week, diplomats said. A resolution needs nine votes in favor and no vetoes by the United States, France, Britain, Russia or China to pass.

That would pretty much make this a symbolic move, at most. While France, Russia, and China will surely go along to get along, It is highly unlikely that U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley would go along with such a measure, so a veto is imminent.

Truly, there was nothing new about Trump’s announcement that publicly recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 did that very thing.

Trump differed in that he made a public show out of it, then quietly, away from the cameras, signed the waiver that would prevent actually moving the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Still, he said it, and while it went over well with our allies, Israel, pretty much everybody else lost their minds.

Too bad.

The draft U.N. resolution “affirms that any decisions and actions which purport to have altered, the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council.”

It “calls upon all States to refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions in the Holy City of Jerusalem, pursuant to resolution 478 (1980) of the Security Council.”

The draft council resolution “demands that all states comply with Security Council resolutions regarding the Holy City of Jerusalem, and not to recognize any actions or measures contrary to those resolutions.”

Just a lot of noise.

Israel considers Jerusalem to be their eternal capital, indivisible.

Palestine, on the other hand, want the eastern portion of Jerusalem to be the capital of an independent Palestinian state. The problem is that Israel captured that eastern sector in 1967, annexed it, and have no intentions in giving it back – a big source of tension in the area, and not recognized internationally.

A U.N. Security Council resolution adopted in December last year “underlines that it will not recognize any changes to the 4 June 1967 lines, including with regard to Jerusalem, other than those agreed by the parties through negotiations.”

This would be the vote that saw a traitorous turn by President Obama, who instructed U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power to abstain, rather than veto.

So this impotent move by the U.N. Security Council is just to put a thumb in the eye of the U.S. and Israel. Nothing more.
