And of course, it’s a California thing.

An “independent Catholic” school in San Anselmo, California has decided the whole Jesus and Mary thing could be offensive to other religions, so they’ve removed and relocated those statues to someplace where they wouldn’t be so up-front and Catholic.

First of all, let me say I don’t get the “independent Catholic” thing. Does it mean they do Catholicism their own way?

Yeah. I’m Pentecostal Holiness. If somebody rolls up in my church and says a picture of Jesus on the wall is offensive, we’d just as likely say, “Wait until you see the massive mural on the next wall!”

Amy Skewes-Cox, who heads San Domenico School’s board of trustees, said at least 18 of the 180 religious icons still remain at the school as part of a plan approved unanimously by the board last year, the Marin Independent Journal reported.

Ms. Skewes-Cox said the timing of the statues’ removals and the national statue debate spurring from the unrest in Charlottesville, Virginia, is an unfortunate coincidence and have “absolutely no connection other than it is change, and people have a hard time with change.”

“If you walk on the campus and the first thing you confront is three or four statues of St. Dominic or St. Francis, it could be alienating for that other religion, and we didn’t want to further that feeling,” she said.

Ok. If they’re of another religion, why are they attending a Catholic school? And if your concern is more for other religions and not your own faith, then just stop calling yourself a Catholic school. Problem solved.

Sister Maureen McInerney, prioress general of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, said the plan is to make the K-12 school more inviting to students of all faiths.

“San Domenico is a Catholic school; it also welcomes people of all faiths,” she told the Marin Independent Journal. “It is making an effort to be inclusive of all faiths.”

Except not every faith is compatible. If you’re more concerned with welcoming different faiths, then your true faith is not in Jesus Christ.

I think it may be time to follow the money. Then get your kids out of that school, if it was a Catholic education you were hoping for.
