Digital Music Services Now Cracking Down on White Supremacists

And soon, white nationalists will have no place to pimp their tunes.

Spotify, the digital music service, is taking steps to delete the work of white supremacist bands from their site.

Using a list published on Monday by Digital Music News, which named 37 white supremacist bands, Spotify has begun the work of culling out those artists.

“We are glad to have been alerted to this content – and have already removed many of the bands identified today, whilst urgently reviewing the remainder,” a Spotify spokesperson said in a statement Thursday.

“Illegal content or material that favors hatred or incites violence against race, religion, sexuality or the like is not tolerated by us,” the spokesperson said. “Spotify takes immediate action to remove any such material as soon as it has been brought to our attention.”

The list they’re responding to was put out in 2014 by the Southern Poverty Law Center, in an effort to target what they saw as bands promoting hate speech, and to force iTunes to drop them from their service.

Pandora is another music service that has joined the efforts to block artists that promote white nationalism.

“We take action to remove content of this nature from Pandora,” a spokesman said. “We removed much of this content in 2014 and are in the process of removing additional material that’s been flagged now.”

Multiple servers and digital services are on high alert, as they look to root out a problem that has been flying under the radar for years, but took center stage in Charlottesville over the weekend.
