Steve Bannon is TOTALLY prepared to be a member of the National Security Council, folks.
He ran Breitbart, after all, and that’s exactly the same thing as handling foreign policy and national security matters.
That’s how one of Trump’s aides sees it, at least.
“I think you need to look at what Stephen Bannon did in terms of building a media giant that has crushed its left-wing rivals in terms of a breitbart.com,” Sebastian Gorka told NPR earlier this week when asked how Bannon’s experience in the media is relevant to national security.
“I think one has to look at what he did for the Trump campaign to understand that this is a man who eats and breathes and sleeps strategy.”
Others may see it differently, but I can’t seem to make the connection between running a website, or even directing a political campaign, and national security issues.
He did serve as a special assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon, but I’m equally unconvinced that that should give him access to national security meetings.
Gorka goes on to praise Bannon’s “strategic mind,” and there’s no doubt, he made the Trump thing work.
That’s not a guarantee that it will work with foreign policy.
The American public were in a heightened state of angst after eight years of President Obama stirring the pot, attempting to turn neighbor against neighbor, weaken us on the world stage, and in general, cause mass dissatisfaction with being American.
Can Bannon expect to implement the same strategy of scorched earth tactics against any seen as foes of Trump and expect that to work internationally?
I think it would be foolish to try.
The order signed by Trump also said the director of national intelligence and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff would attend the meetings for issues that pertained to their expertise and responsibilities.
Well, that’s good.
Representative Stephen Murphy (D-Fla.) introduced a bill earlier in the week that would kick Bannon off the NSC, because, of course he did.
Undoubtedly, Trump wants him there and won’t readily agree to have him removed. Had that not been the case, he’d have never included him.
We’ll have to wait and see just what kind of effect Bannon has on the meetings, but if he clashes with the other members, as some suggest his personality might lead him to do, then he needs to be removed, ASAP.
