Guess Who Else Wanted to Punish Flag Burners?

Guess who else wanted there to be penalties for burning the American flag?

Hillary Clinton, as a senator back in 2006.

Clinton, then a senator from New York, reportedly opposed a constitutional amendment that would criminalize the desecration of the flag, but introduced legislation in 2005 and backed a second bill in 2006 that would criminalize flag burning. More than half of Democrats in the Senate backed her effort, the New York Times reported at the time.

Although one of the flag-burning measures Clinton supported failed in the Senate in June 2006, the bill earned 36 votes, mostly from Democrats in the minority.

So odd that today, after President-elect Trump’s insane tweet about punishments to be leveled for those who burn the flag, Democrats become instant friends of the Constitution, as they rush to condemn his words.

Here’s the thing that partisans need to keep in mind: It was wrong when Hillary suggested it, and it is equally wrong that Trump said it.

We are granted certain liberties in our Constitution. Freedom to assemble, peaceably, and to speech – which covers expression, such as burning a piece of cloth (as long as nobody is wrapped in that cloth).

If we begin shutting down the speech and expression we don’t like, how long before all speech and expression is subject to government approval, and completely outside of what our founders intended?

Only liberal Democrats have comfort with oppressing speech.

Another way to take this: Donald Trump has more in common with liberal Democrats than conservative Republicans.

Evan McMullin, the Independent candidate for the presidency, called out Trump’s maniacal, anti-First Amendment tweet, earlier today, in an awesome reality smackdown.

Just so we’re all on the same page, however, everybody inform your liberal friends that they can put away their fainting couches now. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have, once again, morphed into the same person on an issue.

They’ve got no room to scoff, lest they be called hypocrites.
