The Cancel Culture Is Not a Revolution; Here Is Why

The key political result of the American Revolution was the development of the US Constitution, including the Bill of Rights, which guarantees the unalienable rights stated in the Declaration of Independence for all Americans: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It was the second word – liberty – that was truly revolutionary, as the United States became the first country in human history to actually restrain the ruling central government through a myriad of constitutional checks and balances, as well as provide for the regular election of its representatives (Congress) and the top executive (the president); in other words, real citizen control of the central government from top to bottom. This was unprecedented in human history, as the top rulers (kings, dictators, despots, etc.) of other countries ruled according to unconstrained whims, with the general result frequently being tyranny.

The American political experiment (the revolution) continued through the immediate post-World War II period during which the US propagated democratic ideas and free enterprise around the world as the answer to human suffering and deprivation. The ideals enshrined in the US Constitution have provided guiding principles for people in many other countries who seek the personal and economic freedoms found in America. However, the US political class lost its nerve after the Vietnam War and has been subverted from within by cultural Marxist concepts and corruption paid for by external adversaries such as Communist China and the old USSR.

The latest manifestation of that continuing internal Marxist subversion of America is the cancel culture. The general aims and methodologies used by the Marxist cancel culture activists are nicely summarized in Reason here:

There’s no agreed-upon definition of “cancel culture,” but an open letter published in July in Harper’s Magazine, signed by 153 writers and intellectuals, defined it as “an intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty.”

Cancel cultists call “for swift and severe retribution in response to perceived transgressions of speech and thought,” they wrote. The signers also found it troubling that “institutional leaders, in a spirit of panicked damage control, are delivering hasty and disproportionate punishments.” That the letter appeared in a left-of-center publication was noteworthy given that most—but not all—of these attacks come from the left.

We have seen the cancel culture attack individuals, corporations, and even the symbols of American history in their rage to destroy American traditions and liberties. These activities are anathema to the ideals of the American revolution and contrary to the First Amendment to the US Constitution. (The First Amendment was “first” because the Founders considered it to be the most important amendment). And the ongoing anti-liberty transgressions committed by cancel culture activists are directly aimed at destroying the free speech protections in the First Amendment.

In reality, the cancel culture is a counterrevolution that would return the government of the United States to the despotism and tyranny prevalent in central governments throughout human history. To some, this might be a distinction without a difference, but words have meaning. The Left has controlled political discourse for years in America. They use Orwellian terms to camouflage their objectives. For example, who could forget the “Affordable Care Act” (Obamacare)? It was anything but “affordable,” but then affordability was not the objective; it was merely a waystation on the road toward nationalized healthcare – a Democrat/Marxist political objective that would remove personal freedoms associated with medical decisions and in favor of government-controlled “healthcare.” Then there is the Hologram’s virus relief porkulus bill cleverly named, “The America Rescue Plan Act.” Please.

The Left have glorified revolutions around the world for years, e.g., Mao’s “Cultural Revolution” in China, Castro’s revolution in Cuba, and Chavez’s “Bolivarian Revolution” in Venezuela. Incidentally, the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (the National-Socialist German Workers’ Party – the Nazis) also referred to their movement as the Nazi revolution, but leftists these days gloss over that inconvenient truth. Replacing the old order with variants of socialism is always praiseworthy according to leftists (regardless of the outcome). However, none of those revolutions actually benefited their citizenry as the Left continue to pretend. In fact, they resulted in new horrors for the people and merely exchanged different forms of despotism for Communist dictatorships (or further empowered the existing Communist regime in the case of China’s Cultural Revolution). The end result in all of those revolutions (and others) was a substantial curtailment of the personal and economic liberties of the citizenry.

What distinguishes revolution from counterrevolution is liberty. The bottom line is that rebellions that promote and enhance liberty and personal and economic freedoms are indeed “revolutions” because they are against the old order whose key tenet throughout history is tyranny. Those whose aims and/or results are a curtailment of the freedoms and liberty that were pried from the hands of tyrants are “counterrevolutions.” Marxist rebellions are ALWAYS counterrevolutions.

And the new Marxist-dominated Democrat Party is taking America down the same path as those Communist counterrevolutions in other countries, with the cancel culture serving as the counterrevolutionary change agent through violent street protests, doxing, coercion, and extortion:

The Democrat Party is exploiting the ChiCom virus for political purposes to push the above elements of their counterrevolution (and many more) against the American revolution and US Constitution, and their efforts to limit our freedoms and liberty will continue to accelerate if not stopped by patriotic Americans. This excellent commentary sums up exactly what we have to look forward to in the coming months and years:

If we accept what they are doing to us now, they are just going to keep pushing the envelope.  Over the past 12 months, authorities throughout the western world have used the pandemic as an excuse to impose Orwellian measures that we never would have accepted during normal times.  They are promising us that these measures are just “temporary”, but the pandemic has already been with us for a year and there are no signs that it is going away any time soon.  If those governing us are willing to go to such ridiculous extremes during a relatively minor pandemic, what are they going to be willing to do once things start getting really crazy?

What, indeed? New authoritarian outrages are concocted almost every day by cancel culture theorists and activists. The Democrats won’t be satisfied until they have total political control and have crushed any opponents. It is up to us to end their anti-liberty counterrevolution and pull out the alien cancel culture in all of its manifestations by the roots, regardless of what that effort entails. Time to restore the full meaning of the American Revolution!

The end.
