Top Vaccine Official Given the Choice to Resign or Be Fired As RFK Jr. Reshapes Public Health

The Food and Drug Administration's top vaccine official, Dr. Peter Marks, was given the choice of resigning or being fired on Friday. Marks, the director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, oversaw the approval and monitoring the safety of vaccines and a wide array of other treatments, including cell and gene therapies.

Marks's defenestration shouldn't surprise anyone, and we shouldn't shed any tears over his departure. In my view, Marks is way too cozy with Pharma. During COVID, he campaigned to make the COVID vaccine mandatory for young children despite no evidence of benefit and damned little investigation into potential harms. In other notable cases, Marks personally intervened three times to override staff evaluations and authorize the use of a multiple sclerosis drug that failed clinical trials and again overrode scientific recommendations and allowed the marketing of a lab-grown blood vessel that had mixed evidence of safety and efficacy. His relationship with Health and Human Service Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was never going to work, given their wildly differing opinions on the use of vaccines.

Kennedy recently announced he was going to create a vaccine injury agency.

We're incorporating an agency in CDC that is going to specialize in vaccine injuries. Those are things that priorities for me and for [unintelligible]. These are priorities for the American people. More and more people are suffering from these injuries, and we are committed to having gold-standard science make sure that we can figure out what the treatments are and that we can deliver the best treatments possible to the American people

In fact, a vaccine injury agency could quickly confront HHS with the spectacle of the CDC blaming the head of vaccine approvals for the US government for a lot of nasty stuff.

For a lot more on Marks's history, read this thread.

On his way out of the door, Marks left behind a whiny, self-justifying letter.

“It has become clear that truth and transparency are not desired by the secretary, but rather he wishes subservient confirmation of his misinformation and lies,” Dr. Marks wrote to Sara Brenner, the agency’s acting commissioner. He reiterated the sentiments in an interview, saying: “This man doesn’t care about the truth. He cares about what is making him followers.”

...

“Undermining confidence in well-established vaccines that have met the high standards for quality, safety and effectiveness that have been in place for decades at F.D.A. is irresponsible, detrimental to public health, and a clear danger to our nation’s health, safety and security,” Dr. Marks wrote.

If Kennedy is the poltroon Marks makes him out to be, then he won't survive long, and Marks will be vindicated. If, on the other hand, Marks has been shamelessly carrying water for Pharma and placing Pharma dividends and share prices above the safety and health of Americans, we will find out in a relatively short period of time. Along the way, I hope RFK Jr.'s new organization develops sufficient evidence for multiple criminal prosecutions for violating the Nuremberg Code.
