No, James Mattis' Comments on Israel Are Not the Rabid Anti-Semitism of Ilhan Omar

On the heels of the failure of the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives to condemn the Streicher-esque anti-Semitism of Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar, a new garden industry has sprung up to sanitize her remarks and attempt to gaslight the public into thinking that the uproar, from left and right, over Omar’s hatred of Jews is both a rightwing plot to discredit her and much ado about nothing. The current claim is that Omar’s statements are nothing that former Secretary of Defense James Mattis hasn’t said and it is being shopped about by multiple socialist and neo-communist outlets on the left.

Let’s be clear. What Mattis said here is US policy going back to at least the Camp David Accords. And, I think we can safely say, that part of it was wrong. President Trump–or at least fear of Tehran–has effectively broken the alliance between the Palestinians and the Arab world. Compare and contrast Mattis’s measured and non-controversial statements with these:

  • “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel. #Gaza #Palestine#Israel” — Omar, November 12, 2012
  • “It’s all about the Benjamins baby ????” with regard to pro-Israeli group AIPAC, suggesting they buy the support of members of Congress. — Omar, February 10, 2019
  • “I should not be expected to have allegiance/pledge support to a foreign country in order to serve my country in Congress or serve on committee.” — Omar, March 3, 2019

The degree to which the current iteration of the Democrat party has rushed to embrace the vilest forms of anti-Semitism is truly stunning. Not too long ago, accusing American Jews of having dual loyalty would have been repudiated by everyone, even liberal Democrats. Quite honestly, not too long ago and you’d not hear such a trope mentioned outside a Klan meeting or your nearest Nation of Islam mosque. But now, the Democrats are not able to avoid embracing the inevitable results of their devotion to victim ideology. As Elijah Cummnings said, in essence, who cares what your grandparents went through at Auschwitz and Dachau? Omar is a Muslim refugee. She wins.
