Friday night, Hillary Clinton was holding forth at some event in New York City and she gave a nebulous answer to an obvious question:

“Do you want to run again?” Recode’s Kara Swisher asked during a Friday night Q&A with Clinton.

“No,” Clinton replied quickly, sparking laughter from the audience. But when Swisher pressed her further, she added: “I’d like to be president.”

Clinton went on to say that “there’s going to be so much work to be done” after a Democrat “hopefully” wins the next presidential election.

“The work would be work that I feel very well prepared for having been in the Senate for eight years, having been a diplomat in the State Department,” she said, listing off the qualifications that she often touted during her previous run.

She added that she’s not going to think about a possible run until after the upcoming midterm elections.

Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, announced this month that they will be embarking on a 13-city tour over the next year, hosting discussions about current events and politics across the country.

It is hard to take this as anything other than a soft-launch of a political campaign. She had to know the question was coming–does anyone think any reporter questioning Clinton at a public forum would dare commit lèse majesté by asking her an unapproved question?–and the walking back of an easy “no” is telling.

Add to that some of her sycophants pushing the idea of a Hillary 3.0 candidacy:

“It’s curious why Hillary Clinton’s name isn’t in the mix—either conversationally or in formal polling—as a 2020 candidate,” Reines told Politico. “She’s younger than Donald Trump by a year. She’s younger than Joe Biden by four years. Is it that she’s run before? This would be Bernie Sanders’s second time, and Biden’s third time. Is it lack of support? She had 65 million people vote for her.”

And we have Bill and Hillary Clinton hitting the hustings on what looks and smells like a trademarked Clintonian “listening tour” (no word if the Energizer Bunny will be along):

Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, announced this month that they will be embarking on a 13-city tour over the next year, hosting discussions about current events and politics across the country.

And you see the makings of a campaign that will try to convince Democrat elites that Hillary Clinton is their best chance in 2020. As strange as it sounds, this is not implausible. The Clintons spent a lot of time knocking off a potential generation of Democrat political leadership to clear the deck for Clinton in 2008. The names currently being floated, as Reines correctly observes, are no more competitive than Hillary. Elizabeth Warren has gone full-blown Chernobyl and Kamala Harris is not only too far left for anywhere but California, you can guarantee she doesn’t just have a closet to hide her skeletons, she has a rather large mausoleum.

So, while this is fun to make fun of, she’s floating a trial balloon for a reason. She really does want a rematch with Donald Trump in 2020.
