Why Does CNN Maintain a Twitter Blackout on This Major Event?

The big international news over the past two days has been the mass demonstrations spreading across Iran. The genesis of the demonstrations appears to be widespread dissatisfaction with the way the Iranian economy is performing. Even though we were told by Barack Obama and Ben Rhode’s happy little Echo Chamber that the billions in cash and tens of billions in sanctions relief provided Iran would be used to improve their economy and strengthen the hand of “moderates” in the Iranian government, that doesn’t seem to have happened.

One news organization, the one most closely allied with Obama, with the #Resistance–that would be CNN–seems to be nearly totally ignoring what is happening. Look at the twitter feed from CNN International for the past day or so. I’m going to clip the first and last, so you can see the date-time groups, and just paste text from what is in between:

The blackout is not complete. There is one story on Iran on the CNN homepage. Its headline: Iran protests: Government supporters join counter rallies. The lede:

Crowds of pro-government supporters demonstrated Saturday in Iran after two days of rare anti-government protests which spread to a number of cities.

That’s right. The lede is that government rent-a-mobs are being turned out to counter legitimate protests. This, to most observers, is an indication of weakness. Only CNN makes these command performances seem like an organic response by a large number of Iranians.

For eighteen hours, CNN International’s twitter feed has not mentioned Iran. It has covered Margaret Thatcher’s panda-phobia, Trump’s tweets, avocado, Trump’s approval rating, and deep thoughts from Obama. If anyone has any doubt about where the attention of CNN lies, it is not with the news or with the truth.
