Putin Calls Trump to Thank a Most Unusual Group of People

Vladimir Putin called President Trump on Thursday to thank him. Why? The CIA has passed along actionable intelligence to the Russian FSB that allowed them to foil a terror plot.

Information provided by the CIA helped Russian security services foil an attack on St Petersburg’s Kazan cathedral, the Kremlin says.

The attack was allegedly planned to take place on Saturday, officials say.

In a phone call, President Vladimir Putin thanked Donald Trump for the CIA’s intervention, the Kremlin said.

Mr Putin told Mr Trump that Russia’s special services would hand over information on terror threats to their US counterparts, it added.

Russia’s FSB security service said in a statement on Friday that it had detained seven members of a cell of Islamic State supporters and seized a significant amount of explosives, weapons and extremist literature.

The cell was planning to carry out a suicide attack at a religious institution and kill citizens on Saturday, the FSB statement said (in Russian).

The group was preparing explosions targeting the cathedral and other public places in Russia’s second city, the Kremlin statement said.

I doubt more than a few hours will elapse before Trump is accused of treason because RUSSIA IS NOT OUR FRIEND11!!11!1!!! and because he undoubtedly divulged secret information to the godless Russkies.

As I’ve said time and again. Nations don’t have friends, they have interests. Israel using Jonathan Pollard to spy on us is a prime example of that kind of relationship. George Washington, who’d lived his entire life in a world where Great Britain and France reflexively opposed each other and engaged in nearly non-stop warfare for a few centuries warned us about the stupidity of classifying nations as friends and enemies:

In the execution of such a plan nothing is more essential than that permanent, inveterate antipathies against particular nations and passionate attachments for others should be excluded and that in place of them just and amicable feelings towards all should be cultivated. The nation which indulges towards another an habitual hatred, or an habitual fondness, is in some degree a slave. It is a slave to its animosity or to its affection, either of which is sufficient to lead it astray from its duty and its interest.

Russia, like China, like the EU, is a geopolitical competitor. It has interests, valid and perceived, and it doesn’t serve our nation well to create an enemy because it causes an inconvenience to Donald Trump. And don’t be fooled. This new found fear/hate of Russia is nothing more than a stalking horse for giving credibility to the “collusion” narrative. We have to confront our competitors where necessary, be it the Baltic States or the South China Sea. And we need to find common ground to work with them because we need their help as often as they need ours.

We didn’t have to warn Russia about this attack. But we did. And it shows that the people Trump has appointed, like Mike Pompeo, have their eye on the ball instead of being stampeded by a mob.
