For the first time that we know of, a major Western domestic intelligence agency has been penetrated by Islamic terrorists:

German authorities have arrested an Islamist extremist mole in the country’s domestic intelligence agency who is suspected of passing on state secrets to fellow radicals.

The 51-year-old had been working at the agency since April 2016 and was responsible for observing the German Islamist scene.

A statement from prosecutors on Wednesday said the man was being investigated on suspicion of preparing an act of violent subversion, breaching official secrecy, and of willingness to commit a crime.

German media reports said the Verfassungsschutz mole was a naturalised German of Spanish descent who converted to Islam two years ago.

Spiegel news magazine said he had pledged his allegiance in 2014 to the Salafist preacher and recruiter Mohamed Mahmoud, who is fighting for Isis in Syria.

Authorities suspect he infiltrated the Verfassungsschutz in order to warn fellow Islamists of police operations and enable them to carry out terror attacks on the agency.

The man allegedly made Islamist statements on the internet and approached a fellow radical in a chatroom, identifying himself as an intelligence agent. He told him he could help other Islamists gain access to the Verfassungsschutz in order to carry out attacks against “infidels”. He said this would “find favour with Allah”, adding that he was “prepared to do anything to help the brothers”.

I deliberately caveat my lede because I suspect that Britain’s MI5 and our Department of Homeland Security are, as they used to say, poxed to the eyebrows with Islamists. One can’t look at the Fort Hood, San Bernardino and Orlando terror attacks and not wonder if at some point there was more than fate involved in permitting these attacks to develop (yes, I am well aware of the dictum about not attributing to malice anything that can be explained by stupidity).

Throughout our history famous men have noted that the Constitution is not a suicide pact. Unfortunately, under the Obama regime it has become one insofar as it deals with Islamic extremists. The situation is even worse in Western Europe where Islamists operating in a sea of thoroughly unassimilated Muslim immigrants have created a near state-within-a-state where national law does not apply.

General James Mattis offers an intriguing question:

Noting that U.S. influence in the Middle East is at the lowest point in 40 years, Gen. Mattis urged setting up a new security architecture that would allow the United States to “take our own side in this fight” against political Islam.

“The fundamental question I believe is, ‘Is political Islam in our best interest?’ If not, what is our policy to authoritatively support the countervailing forces?”

Gen. Mattis said violent jihadi terrorists cannot be allowed to hide behind false religious garb and at the same time “leave us unwilling to define this threat with the clarity it deserves.”

During the Cold War, we barred communists from holding commisssions in the Armed Forces and from federal employment. Being a communist was guaranteed to keep you from holding a security clearance. It wasn’t because communists were inherently violent, no commies ever flew airplanes into US buildings, but because they believed in the overthrow of the US government. No dissimilar to Islam’s call to convert nonbelievers and to abolish all law save sharia. In fact, if you look at the last paragraph of the pullquote, you’ll see that this mole was European convert to Islam making the parallel to communist infiltration even more obvious.

At a minimum, the FBI, DHS and other federal agencies must cut all official ties with CAIR and other Islamist groups and the activities of employees should be monitored for signs of any flirtation with radical Islamists just the same as their credit reports and police records are monitored.
