Well, he didn’t actually say ‘death to the Zionist Entity’ but he might as well have.

Yesterday at a meeting of J Street, a leftwing group that vows to support Israel by destroying it, White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough used Palestinian rhetoric to refer to Israels’ “occupation” and vowed that the administration would not accept Prime Minister Netanyahu’s statement that he would not try to negotiate a dismemberment of Israel with a Palestinian Authority that refuses to accept the premise of two states.

White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough made clear in a speech to a left-leaning Israel advocacy group that President Barack Obama isn’t letting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu off the hook for his dismissal of a two-state solution.

That stance, as well as Netanyahu’s suggestion also made in the closing days before last week’s Israeli elections that he’d approved settlements in contested territory in Jerusalem for the strategic purpose of changing the borders are “so very troubling,” McDonough told J Street’s annual conference in Washington. He called the pro-Israel group, which opposes some of Netanyahu’s policies, “our partner.”

McDonough said the Obama administration is well aware of the regional security problems Netanyahu referenced in explaining why he didn’t see a two-state solution as an imminent possibility. But he said Obama does not believe that is or could be reason to back off talks — and this is not simply matter of personal “pique” about Netanyahu, the chief of staff said.

“An occupation that has lasted more than 50 years must end,” McDonough said, one of several times he brought the crowd to its feet.

What the Obama administration is doing in regards to Israel is clear. They have decided that Israel, not the violence, corruption, and instability that is endemic to the Middle East, and indeed to the Islamic world, is the cause of all problems in the Middle East. They have also decided that Iran is a better geopolitical partner and the best way of wooing Iran is by giving them a nuclear weapon and dismantling Israel as a prelude to its complete eradication.

This whole situation abounds in irony. The geopolitical situation that brought Netanyahu to the point of declaring that a two-state solution was off the table is totally the making of the Obama administration. It is the logical manifestation of the policy he instituted in Iraq, Libya, Egypt and Syria that has created a region awash in jihadis. And now Netanyahu is being criticized for not negotiating with jihadi sympathizers.

The regional instability has given Iran an out-sized role in fighting ISIS. Iran has used this to seize control of Yemen and bolster Lebanese Hezbollah… never mind, though, the same brainiacs who thought up this plan have declared Iran and Hezbollah are no longer terror threats. Iran, Obama’s new regional partner has rejected the same two state solution that Obama is demanding Israel accept:

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has assailed a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians, saying the Palestinian bid for statehood at the United Nations is doomed to fail.

Any plan to divide a Palestinian state would be unacceptable, Khamenei said on Saturday, adding that such a state could exist temporarily as part of “liberated territory”.

“Our claim is freedom of Palestine, not part of Palestine. Any plan that partitions Palestine is totally rejected,” Khamenei told the gathering. “Palestine spans from the river [Jordan] to the [Mediterranean] sea, nothing less.”

He added that the Palestinians should not limit themselves to seeking a country within the occupied West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip which would implicitly recognise Israel because “all land belongs to Palestinians.”

While “Palestine President” Mahmoud Abbas mouths support for the two-state solution, he has injected a huge poison pill into the mix by insisting on an absolute right of Palestinian “refugees,” some who have been “refugees” for nearly 70 years, to return to their former homes. This is nothing more that a strategy to flood Israel with a hostile population, shot through and through with jihadis, whose only claim to the land is that they lost a war and ran away rather than live in Israel.

Speaking to a crowd of Palestinians from East Jerusalem on Saturday, in an address largely overlooked because it coincided with the death of former Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon, Abbas also voiced a hard-line regarding a number of other matters on the negotiating table. He stated that no peace agreement would be possible without East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital. He also refused to recognize Israel’s self-definition as the state of the Jewish people, a principle endorsed on Sunday by Arab foreign ministers. But while those two positions were not new, his tougher line on the refugees was.

Abbas, moreover, doesn’t have the clout to negotiate terms with Israel. If he attempted to do so, his head would be on a pike before you can say falafel.

Some 60 percent of Palestinians reject the idea of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Arab conflict, according to a new poll, and instead support a five-year plan to “work toward reclaiming all of historic Palestine, from the river to the sea.” However, a clear majority do not support the use of violence to achieve their goals.

The survey, commissioned by The Washington Institute, found that only 31 percent of Palestinians in the West Bank and 22 percent of those in Gaza supported a two-state solution. Nonetheless, just 11 percent of West Bankers and 8 percent of Gazans would be in favor of a one-state solution, in which Jews and Arabs “have equal rights in one country, from the river to the sea.”

When two-thirds of the people reject a two-state solution and 90% reject living in a state where Jews have equal rights there isn’t much room to maneuver.

What Obama is insisting Israel do is to accept terms with people who have expressed a persistent desire to exterminate Jews and have routinely acted upon that desire. Neither the Palestinians nor jihadis nor Iranian support any solution that does not involve the dissolution of Israel. And Obama is squarely on that side of the equation.
