A Maryland grand jury has indicted former National Security Adviser John Bolton.
There were hints earlier in the day on Thursday that an indictment may be forthcoming, as CNN reported that the Department of Justice (DOJ) was expected to ask a grand jury to return one.
The lead prosecutor on the Bolton investigation arrived at the courthouse in Greenbelt just before 1:30 p.m. Thursday to meet with the grand jury. The grand jury had been there throughout the morning hearing other matters.
Bolton has been under investigation for alleged unlawful handling of classified information.
Sources previously told CNN that part of the Justice Department’s investigation centers around notes he was making to himself in an AOL email account — at times writing summaries of his activities like diary entries — when he was working for Trump.
The grand jury has now obliged.
The indictment alleges that Bolton knowingly transmitted materials related to foreign policy matters while communicating with outside contacts after leaving the White House.
The FBI executed search warrants at Bolton's home and office in August.

An investigation into Bolton's potential leaking of classified information was initially launched by the DOJ in 2020 in relation to his memoir, titled “The Room Where It Happened," but was then shuttered after Joe Biden took office.
The book made several dubious claims, including allegations that President Trump asked for help with his election from Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Subpoenas were issued at the time, and a grand jury was convened before the Biden administration stepped in to shut it down.
The Washington Post reported in 2020 that administration officials at the time had "uncovered legitimate instances of unauthorized disclosures of classified information."
Trump posted on X that the former National Security Adviser “broke the law” and “should be in jail, money seized, for disseminating, for profit, highly Classified information.”
Bolton's indictment follows those of New York Attorney General Letitia James (on claims of bank fraud) and former FBI Director James Comey (for false statements and obstruction). Both of those cases are pending in the Eastern District of Virginia. Bolton's case will proceed in Maryland.
This is a developing story. RedState will provide additional updates as warranted.
