President Donald Trump held a press conference from the Oval Office Thursday morning to announce the momentous trade deal the U.S. has struck with the U.K., after which he took questions from the press.
One exchange came as quite a surprise: It appears that Trump has decided to pull Ed Martin's nomination as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Trump had high praise for Martin but acknowledged that getting him confirmed had become a problem, compliments of some Republican resistance. He didn't come out and name Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), but it's clear that's who he was referring to.

REPORTER: [Regarding] your nominee for U.S. Attorney of D.C., do you have a back-up plan if this —
TRUMP: Oh, I do, yeah, but he's a terrific person, and he wasn't getting the support from people that I thought. You know, he's done a very good job — crime is down 25 percent in D.C. during his period of time.
I'm very disappointed in that, but I have so many different things that I'm doing now with the trade — you know, I'm one person, I can only make — boom, I can only lift that little phone so many times in a day. But we have somebody else that will be great.
I just want to say Ed is unbelievable, and hopefully we can bring him into — whether it's DOJ or whatever — in some capacity, because [he's] really outstanding. It was — to me, it was disappointing, I'll be honest; I have to be straight — I was disappointed. A lot of people were disappointed, but that's the way it works sometimes, you know, that's the way it works. And he wasn't rejected, but we felt it would be very — it would be hard. And we have somebody else that we'll be announcing over the next two days who's going to be great.
This news comes following Tillis' indication that he wouldn't support the nomination. Tillis sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, so his refusal to support Martin essentially blocked his being voted out of committee to the full Senate.

On Wednesday, when he was asked about it, Trump said:
“But that’s really up to the senators, if they feel that way. They have to vote the way they vote. They have to follow their heart and they have to follow their mind.”
Tillis appeared dug in on the issue, despite pressure from key Republican figures, including RNC National Committeewoman Kyshia Brassington, who wrote:

Disappointing for Martin, no doubt, though it sounds as though he'll land another role in the administration. Now, we wait to see who Trump names as a replacement.
