WATCH: Commotion in Virginia State Senate After Winsome Sears Refers to Transgender Senator As 'Sir'

Presiding over the senate, Sears took a question from State Sen. Danica Roem, a Democrat who identifies as female. During the course of her answer to Roem, Sears referred to Roem as "sir," which reportedly caused Roem to walk out in a huff.

The Senate is back in session, and there are several hearings set: 

  • Judiciary - Hearings to examine stopping the flow of American guns to the cartels
  • Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs - Hearings to examine the U.S. technology fueling Russia's war in Ukraine
  • Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions - Julie Su nomination
  • Foreign Relations - Hearings to examine Yemen and Red Sea security issues
  • Environment and Public Works - A joint hearing to examine the presence of microplastics in water
  • Intelligence (Select) - Closed briefing on certain intelligence matters

The House is out until Wednesday, but the talk is all about the potential shutdown

White House What's Up

President Biden is set to meet with congressional leaders.  

The President will meet with the four Congressional leaders at the White House. The President will discuss the urgency of passing the bipartisan national security supplemental and keeping the government open.

Two more cases are set for oral argument before the Supreme Court:

  1. McIntosh v. U.S. - Examining whether a district court may enter a criminal-forfeiture order outside the time limitations set forth in Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 32.2.
  2. Cantero v. Bank of America, N.A. - Examining whether the National Bank Act preempts the application of state escrow-interest laws to national banks

In Fulton County, Nathan Wade's divorce attorney is scheduled to take the stand to testify in the disqualification hearing regarding DA Fani Willis. 

Of Primary Concern

Michigan's presidential primary is on tap for today — both for Democrats and Republicans, though the GOP is employing a hybrid process that may make things a bit murky. For the Dems, the big question will be turnout. 

The early vote totals may include a number of “uncommitted” ballots from Democrats unhappy with Biden’s support for Israel in its response to the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas. Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib has urged voters to mark their ballots that way on Tuesday to send a message to Biden and other Democrats.

MORNING MUSING

There's been a fair amount of discussion regarding the 25th Amendment of late, but the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified 73 years ago today. That's the one limiting a president to two terms. Until recently, I'd always thought that an appropriate setting. Perhaps the current president could be persuaded one is really enough? It's certainly been more than enough for me.
