On Sunday, the House Homeland Security Committee unveiled its articles of impeachment against DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The committee will be holding a hearing on Tuesday, January 30, at 10:00 am Eastern to mark up the articles. Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) will be offering an amendment to House Resolution 863, which reads, in part: 

That Alejandro Nicholas Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States of America, is impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors, and that the following articles of impeachment be exhibited to the United States Senate:

Articles of impeachment exhibited by the House of Representatives of the United States of America in the name of itself and of the people of the United States of America, against Alejandro N. Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States of America, in maintenance and support of its impeachment against him for high crimes and misdemeanors. 

The articles listed include: 

1. Willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law
2. Breach of the public trust 

The articles, consisting of 20 pages, lay out a detailed basis for the impeachment:

"Throughout his tenure as Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro N. Mayorkas has repeatedly violated laws enacted by Congress regarding immigration and border security. In large part because of his unlawful conduct, millions of aliens have illegally entered the United States on an annual basis with many unlawfully remaining in the United States. His refusal to obey the law is not only an offense against the separation of powers in the Constitution of the United States, it also threatens our national security," Republicans allege in the first article.

"Alejandro N. Mayorkas knowingly made false statements to Congress that the border is 'secure,' that the border is ‘no less secure than it was previously,’ that the border is 'closed,' and that DHS has ‘operational control’ of the border," they allege in the second article.

Regarding the articles of impeachment, Green said: 

"These articles lay out a clear, compelling, and irrefutable case for Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ impeachment. He has willfully and systemically refused to comply with immigration laws enacted by Congress. He has breached the public trust by knowingly making false statements to Congress and the American people, and obstructing congressional oversight of his department. These facts are beyond dispute, and the results of his lawless behavior have been disastrous for our country."

On Friday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) indicated he plans to hold a vote on the articles of impeachment sooner rather than later.

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told fellow Republican lawmakers that he intends to hold a House-wide vote on whether to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas "as soon as possible."

Johnson made the announcement in a letter to colleagues sent on Friday, a copy of which was obtained by Fox News Digital.

"The facts show that President Biden and his Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas have willfully ignored and actively undermined our nation’s immigration laws," the speaker wrote. "Rather than accept accountability, President Biden is now trying to blame Congress for what HE himself intentionally created."

Given that, it appears likely we'll see a vote in the House sometime this coming week. Stay tuned.
