I’m not really a morning person. I’ve adapted over the years to the point that I normally rise around 6:00 am. Sometimes, I wake up an hour earlier – particularly if news alerts are going off on my phone or watch. So it was that Tuesday morning, while I tried to make the most of that last 45 minutes or so of sleep, I noticed my watch buzzing at me as several alerts came in.
“Must be something big,” I thought – so I looked. And I suppose it was “big” in the sense that an incumbent president announcing his re-election bid is “big” – but it wasn’t terribly surprising, given his team had pre-announced the announcement last Thursday. (What is it with pre-announcement announcements these days? When did that become a thing?)
Anyway, the one surprising aspect of the news was that it came in at 6:00 am Eastern. Who announces anything that isn’t an emergency at 6:00 am – when 80 percent of the country is still sound asleep? And by video on social media?
It’s almost as if they wanted it to fly under the radar. As a Biden critic, I can see why they might want that. But if you’re truly jazzed about the launch of a campaign, why wouldn’t you wait until most folks were awake to see it? Unless, of course, you’re not so jazzed about it after all…
