An April 1st piece, the Washington Examiner seems to hint at two people who are under close scrutiny by U.S. Attorney John Durham as he closes in on completing his assessment of the predicate for the “Crossfire Hurricane” investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign.

Those two people include former CIA Head John Brennan and FBI “confidential human source” (read: informant) Stefan Halper, who has spent the last several years as an academic at Cambridge University.

According to Sidney Powell, attorney for Ret. Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who is currently appealing his case that he lied to investigators, her client was “set up” because he was preparing to audit the intelligence community as national security advisor to President Donald Trump before he was charged.

Speaking to the the Vicki McKenna Show on 1310 WIBA Madison on Tuesday, Powell said her client “threatened to expose wrongdoing by top intelligence officials in the Obama administration.”

“He was going to audit the intel agencies because he knew about the billions Brennan and company were running off books,” Powell said, referring to former CIA Director John Brennan.

The Examiner compares Powell’s statements to those made by investigative journalist Lee Smith last November when he told Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo that he hoped Flynn’s reputation could be saved and that he could ultimately get back to the work he had undertaken to expose the corruption of officials in the Obama administration.

“In addition to Gen. Flynn’s name being cleared, I hope that his initiative to get to the bottom of what these people were doing — to audit the intelligence community … that’s something else we need to look at again,” Smith said. “As well, his initiative to clean out the deep state.”

They also discussed Stefan Halper, an academic who was given high-dollar Pentagon contracts to study Russia and China. Halper is also reported to be an FBI informant who had conversations with Trump campaign aides and is under scrutiny by U.S. Attorney John Durham’s review of the Russia investigation.

“There’s no telling how many billions of taxpayer dollars they’re running off books for the different intel agencies … and, of course, we see evidence of that … with what was paid to Stefan Halper for his shenanigans. It just goes on and on,” Smith [sic] alleged at the time.

Powell has been fighting to have Flynn’s guilty plea withdrawn. Flynn, who was hired by Obama to head the Defense Intelligence Agency, ultimately had a falling out with the administration over their approach to ISIS as the “JV team” and his insistence that the administration was giving Americans a sense of false hope in a number of national security areas related to foreign powers.

In a 2015 interview with the New York Times, Flynn said the CIA had “lost sight of who they actually work for.”

“They work for the American people,” Flynn was quoted as saying. “They don’t work for the president of the United States … It’s become a very political organization.”
