Nancy Pelosi: "DREAMers are Americans, Too"

Tuesday night at President Trump’s first State of the Union address, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) looked like she ate a lemon  (the first tweet below is hilarious). She also apparently was tweeting from the chamber (note the time stamp on the second tweet, issued from her official account, below).

My personal recollection (we watch so you don’t have to! (but I really hope you watched, too)) is that at 10:29 pm, Trump’s speech was either just ending or had just ended, so maybe she was in the hallway. But more likely the tweet was fired off by a staffer. Not that it matters, because what’s interesting about it is the tone-deafness of a tweet she approved from her official account, particularly in light of a speech that ventured very far away from the nationalist stuff Democrats are sure lives in Donald Trump’s heart.

In fact, the entire speech was a nod to the people that make up this great nation, both in the past and in the future. The closing was particularly poignant:

Americans fill the world with art and music.  They push the bounds of science and discovery.  And they forever remind us of what we should never forget:  The people dreamed this country. The people built this country.  And it is the people who are making America great again.

As long as we are proud of who we are, and what we are fighting for, there is nothing we cannot achieve.

As long as we have confidence in our values, faith in our citizens, and trust in our God, we will not fail.

Our families will thrive.

Our people will prosper.

And our Nation will forever be safe and strong and proud and mighty and free.

Thank you, and God bless America.

What Ms. Pelosi is trying to do is suggest and instill the idea that Trump and the GOP consider the DREAMers, brought here illegally by their parents and the subject of much debate as Congress charts a new course for legislating immigration reform, as less than American. (She’s also an open-borders advocate, so rhetorically framing immigrants who come from South America, Central America or Mexico as Americans meets her agenda of unencumbered movement across borders.) Trump attempted to close that divide and link the legal citizens of the U.S. with those hoping for a shot at citizenship when he said, “Americans are dreamers, too.”

No wonder Nancy looks so sour. That kind of talk doesn’t really help achieve the divisiveness she needs to ensure her agenda, particularly the part about Trump being a nativist facist, or whatever new pejorative they’ve decided on this week. And a further wrench in the engine is that Trump’s immigration framework calls for something that looks an awful lot like providing a real pathway to citizenship for DREAMers over the course of 10 or 12 years. It states specifically:

DACA LEGALIZATION: Provide legal status for DACA recipients and other DACA-eligible illegal immigrants, adjusting the time-frame to encompass a total population of approximately 1.8 million individuals.

·       10-12 year path to citizenship, with requirements for work, education and good moral character.

·       Clear eligibility requirements to mitigate fraud.

·       Status is subject to revocation for criminal conduct or public safety and national security concerns, public charge, fraud, etc.

So if Nancy and her fellow Democrats can see clear to supporting that framework, those DREAMers will not only be Americans, but U.S. citizens. What a pickle this must be for her.

I almost feel bad for Nancy. Having those kinds of tweets queued up, positive they’re going to be brilliant zingers, only to have them fall flat.

Sour taste, indeed.
