As RedState previously reported, something not widely known about the viral "frat dudes save the American flag" moment at UNC-Chapel Hill from last Tuesday was the circumstances surrounding the UNC-CH American flag before the pro-Hamas agitators stormed the campus to take it down the first time around.
The flag they ripped down had actually been flying at half-staff in honor of the four law enforcement officers who were murdered – three U.S. marshals and one Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer – after attempting to serve a warrant in Charlotte last Monday.
The reason it's not widely known is that there was scant to no mainstream media coverage of their disrespect of a flag flying at half-staff. In fact, the same is true of their coverage of the frat bros who, outside of Fox News, did not get much attention from the national press.
The MSM, just like the pro-censorship goons in Big Tech and the Democratic Party, also would prefer that people do not know exactly why the "peaceful protesters" at UNC-Chapel Hill were arrested in the first place, arrests that took place in the early morning hours last Tuesday, and which riled up the demonstrators to the point they stormed the campus and did their thing that afternoon.
According to UNC-CH administrators, here's what led up to the arrests. You will be shocked, deeply shocked, I'm sure, to find out that these were not in fact "peaceful protesters":
The recent protesters on our campus, many of whom are not students, have continually and aggressively overstepped boundaries and shown that they are not interested in a peaceful demonstration. Their actions and rhetoric prove they are willing to escalate their tactics to the point of putting everyone in danger.
In recent days, members of this group and others have caused damage to Polk Place, broken into academic buildings after hours, propped doors open to locked buildings, torn down barricades, pounded on windows and attempted to push through officers to forcibly enter South Building, hit police and other vehicles, thrown furniture in front of police vehicles injuring officers, entered classrooms during finals to cause disruptions, taken down the American flag flying over Polk Place twice, and thrown water bottles and fluids at University workers, police and administrators.
Most troubling, we have learned of an arson threat against a Jewish fraternity building and seen multiple instances of clearly antisemitic messages and threats in buildings.
Strangely, this, too, didn't get much more than a passing mention in local media reports, probably because it totally disrupted the bogus "peaceful protesters" narrative they often use to insult our collective intelligence.
In a press conference held Monday, woke UNC-CH faculty members who criticized the administration's handling of the encampment and who demanded amnesty for the students who were suspended failed to mention those inconvenient arrest details. Instead, they focused on the "freedom of speech" talking point because apparently putting your fellow students in danger should be considered protected speech as long as The Cause™ is, in their view, just.
Well, no, their cause is not a just one nor are attempts to intimidate/silence those who seek to shine a brighter spotlight on issues like these that the activist left and their media/Big Tech/Democrat allies would prefer to be swept under the rug.
