Last night during the vice presidential debate between VP Mike Pence (R) and Sen. Kamala Harris (D), a fly took center stage by landing on Pence’s head at one point.
Though some good and bad-natured jokes were made about it by random Twitter users, and “Pence Fly” Twitter accounts were created, the professionals in the mainstream media took it a step further, making sure to pay attention to the important details like how much time it spent there:
A fly stayed on Vice President Pence’s head for more than 2 minutes at the debate https://t.co/a0jGLHLVR1

NBC News even invited readers and viewers to “watch” it:

Post-debate commentary from biased, network news “journalists” and other anti-Trump media figures went much further. Take, for instance, “CBS This Morning” co-host and friend-of-Obama Gayle King, who had this reaction: (emphasis added)
“I still keep going back to that fly because you know, number one, I’ve never seen anything like that. It was a fly of color too, that came at a very opportune time and that is the Saturday Night Live skit — skit waiting to happen on Saturday. Can’t wait to see it.”
Because that’s what debates between two people who want to be national leaders are supposed to be about – “opportune times” to create content for SNL. Right? SMH.

Unhinged Never Trumper Steve Schmidt went even more over the top, because Orange Man Bad:
“I don’t think it’s ever a good sign when a fly lands on your head for two minutes,” declared Schmidt on MSNBC. “You know that’s a sign all through the history of sin, and historically, biblically.”
“You know a fly, he who commands the fly, has always been seen historically as the mark of the devil,” Schmidt went on.
Watch it. He wasn’t joking:

David Frum, another off-the-rails Never Trumper, wrote an entire column about it, using the fly as a metaphor – because everything is stupid:
“One powerful visual moment concentrated everything—and symbolized the Pence vice presidency.. Through the scandals, crimes, disasters of four years, Pence was the man pretending not to notice. And now there was a fly on his head, and he pretended not to notice that too.” D. Frum pic.twitter.com/N0PTPVfdtV

The Biden campaign used the fly as a fundraising opportunity, because, of course they did:

“Truth over flies.”

The Trump campaign, on the other hand, got to the heart of the matter in dinging the media for their obsession with analyzing the fly’s appearance:

This is one of the reasons I despise debates so much. Because when Democrats lose the debates, the media tends to want to focus on things that are entirely irrelevant, in order to distract from the real issues. That’s exactly what happened here. Harris didn’t have a great debate performance, and because of that, the focus is on everything but how poorly she did.
Take a bow, media. This is journalism at its finest. You’ve really outdone yourself here. Bravo. Applause. Standing ovation. You should be so proud of yourselves.
