If you’ve heard one Democratic hot take on the successful U.S. strike against Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani in Iraq, you’ve heard them all, right?
Wrong.
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) took it to a new level this morning during an appearance on CNN after she was asked by host Jim Sciutto about her thoughts on the Trump-authorized airstrike against Soleimani.
Her answer? In addition to (falsely) claiming it was unconstitutional (which Sciutto, to his credit, pushed back on), Wasserman Schultz stated in so many words that Trump was wagging the dog in an effort to distract from the left’s ongoing impeachment efforts. Here’s what she said about the latter allegation (transcribed):
“What I think is going on here, frankly, is that this action was taken more in President Trump’s self-interests rather than our national interests.
We had, you know, damning developments in just the last day where emails came out that made it very clear that they covered up the real reason behind the withholding of hundreds of millions of dollars to Ukraine. Donald Trump was just impeached a week and a half ago.
And we need to get to the bottom of how and who helped him carry out this illegal cover-up to allow him to withhold aid to help him politically and personally, allowing Ukraine to interfere in the presidential election in 2020. That’s outrageous, and I think that has a lot to do with what this attack was about.”

This is just insane.
Here’s a timely reminder of just some of the death and destruction Qassem Soleimani has masterminded:
State Department says Iran responsible for killing 608 U.S. troops during Iraq War.
Qasem Soleimani led all Iranian and Iranian-backed forces in those operations.
17% of U.S. troops killed in Iraq from 2003 to 2011 orchestrated by Iran, State Dept. says

I've written this piece 2 years ago. Qassem Soleimani was responsible for crimes like that. He recruited Afghan refugee kids to serve as Assad's cannon fodder in Syria. https://t.co/nEw3IU5Got

Today, I'll say these rare words once more: thank you President @realDonaldTrump.
Qassem Soleimani was #1 source of evil & instability in Middle East, responsible for killing US troops & enabling Assad's genocide.
World is much better off without him. I'm grateful he's gone.

Not only that, but as Nick Arama noted earlier, Soleimani had just attacked us and had plans to do it again. Trump clearly wasn’t going to wait around and let that happen.
This had nothing to do with wagging the dog. Trump had every reason to authorize the retaliatory strike.
Democrats really are off a cliff. I was saying this morning what many have in the past about Democrats and their chances of winning the election this year: All they have to do is to not be crazy. But they just can’t do it. Trump Derangement Syndrome is consuming them.
If the Trump War Room is on their toes, they’ll grab audio of Wasserman Schultz’s remarks and play them in an ad over footage of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad being ruthlessly attacked. Let the American people see once again just how unhinged Democrats have become.
