Never Trumper Bill Kristol Tried to Zing Ted Cruz on "Impeachment Circus" Comments and It Did Not Go Well

Sen. Ted Cruz appeared on Fox News last week two days after the White House authorized the release of the Trump/Zelensky phone call transcript, and three days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi publicly declared an impeachment inquiry would soon be underway.

Naturally, the focus of Cruz’s interview was on whether or not he felt there was quid pro quo on the call and if he believed President Trump committed any impeachable offenses on the call.

Here’s what Cruz said:

“Washington is always a circus, but this is three rings with all the clowns and it’s nuts right now.” Cruz also had a hilarious analogy describing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, pushed by leftists in her party, announcing Democrats would pursue impeachment proceedings. Cruz quipped, “Watching her, it almost reminded me of a hostage video; she was blinking SOS.”
[…]
“And it’s driven at the end of the day — Congressional Democrats are angry. They’re angry about the 2016 election and ultimately they’re angry at the voters. They’re angry that the voters elected President Trump. All of this, from day one, from day one they have been wanting to get this president out of office, and as a result they’re not doing the job.”

Cruz’s comments didn’t sit well with the Never Trumpers at the Bulwark, including editor-at-large Bill Kristol. He tweeted out a link to a recent Bulwark piece with a quote critical about how Cruz had decided after just two weeks that the impeachment push was a “circus” even though in the past he (allegedly) was not so quick to dismiss the idea when it came to impeaching President Obama:

Cruz saw Kristol’s tweet and leveled him, noting that House Democrats had a history of showing support for impeaching Trump over non-impeachable offenses, like they did in response to his criticism of The Squad from over the summer:

Kristol, of course, didn’t respond.

Here are some inconvenient facts for Never Trumpers:

Democrats (and the mainstream media) have been laser-focused on impeaching Trump since well-before he was even elected. They ramped up the talk before he was even inaugurated, and Rep. Maxine Waters made the call for impeachment official during the Trump presidency barely two weeks after he’d taken office.

The impeachment efforts against Trump have been sham efforts at ousting him from the Oval Office because of political disagreements and because he disrupted what was to be the coronation of Queen Hillary in 2016.

Cruz is right to be skeptical right off of any efforts Democrats put forth to impeach Trump, no matter what kind of whataboutism games Kristol and the rest of the crew at Bulwark decide to play on any given day.
