Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) was interviewed by MSNBC‘s Rachel Maddow this week on the 2020 presidential race. When the topic turned to vice presidential possibilities, Booker did what Democrats do best when seeking votes.
He shamelessly pandered.
The man who once compared himself to Spartacus told Maddow it was too early in the game to be investing any energy on looking for running mates, but that the person he picked would most likely be a woman:
Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) stressed the diversity of the Democratic presidential field Tuesday night, adding that while he does not want to “box himself in” so far away from Election Day, he would be “looking at women first” as a running mate should he become his party’s presidential nominee.
“We have such a great field of leaders, I think you’ll rarely see a Democratic ticket anymore without gender diversity, race diversity,” Booker told MSNBC host Rachel Maddow. “It’s something we should have. I’m not going to box myself in, but should I come to it, you know I’ll be looking to women first.”
Assuming he picked from the list of female 2020 hopefuls that have already announced, he’d choose from his fellow Senators Harris (CA), Klobuchar (MN), Warren (MA), and Gillibrand (NY). And on the House side, there’s Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (HI).
Would he pick Hillary? Considering how every time she runs for president she acts as though she should be coronated, I doubt she’d give playing second fiddle any serious consideration, no matter who the candidate ultimately ended up being.
She wants full control of the reins or nothing at all.
I could see Booker being the one person out of all the Democrats running who would do something out of the box by picking a female Republican to be his running mate. Which he would do to totally shore up his “willingness to reach across the aisle to get things done” creds, of course.
It’s too bad he appears to be ruling out having a male vice presidential running mate. A little part of me was looking forward to finally getting a look at T-Bone.
