Los Angeles City Council Explores Option To Sue Teachers' Union Over School Reopening

Dear, sweet irony, how I love thee.

The Los Angeles City Council, which has long been the puppet of the Teachers’ Union, is suddenly locked in a battle to reopen schools in Los Angeles, as the continued school closures have led to anger amongst parents and students who continue to be alienated by policy instituted to combat the spread of COVID-19.

In following comrade Rahm Emanuel’s example and direction to “never let a crisis go to waste,” the Los Angeles Unified School District has been slowed from reopening over a list of unrelated demands issued by the Teachers’ Union.  The union, which as opposed school reopenings for alleged “scientific reasons,” has also stated certain “equality” issues they want addressed before they will allow for teachers to return to schools.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles City Council, facing pressure from parents to reopen schools, has their own “scientific evidence” that it is safe to reopen schools now and is looking at the potential of filing a lawsuit against the Teachers’ Union to force the reopening of schools in the district.

From CBS2:

“City Councilmember Joe Buscaino introduced a motion Tuesday seconded by Councilmember Gil Cedillo asking City Attorney Mike Feuer to explore all legal options to assist in reopening L.A. Unified schools.”

The Los Angeles City Attorney, Mike Feuer, has stated that he doesn’t believe that a suit is the best path forward, likely because he is afraid of the blowback from the Teachers’ Union should he support the action.

Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent  Austin Beutner has stated he opposes any effort to prematurely open schools.

From Bloomberg:

“Los Angeles is a national example of how governmental dysfunction has allowed the virus to rampage out of control,” Beutner said. LAUSD is home to a little less than half of the area’s public-school population.”

I am not saying I enjoy watching the two sides duke it out but…. wait… nevermind, I am enjoying watching the two sides duke it out. For too long Democrats have allowed unions to use their unethical, untruthful, and unscientific opinions to force policy in Los Angeles, which has led to LAUSD being among the worst districts in the country.  To see several ultra-liberals on the council be forced to spar with the unions is in some ways, entertaining.  While many of us on the right here have seen this coming for a long time, for both sides to be claiming scientific superiority, tells us exactly what we can expect from other “scientific evidence” claiming a preferable approach to dealing with COVID-19.

In the meanwhile, get the popcorn.  This is going to get interesting.
