It was announced on Tuesday, that Former President Barack Obama was to be heading out on the campaign trail for Joe Biden, just three weeks before the election.  Obama has previously endorsed his former VP and done several voter-engagement videos, but this is the first that he will hit the campaign trail for Biden.

From ABC News:

“Former President Barack Obama is expected to hit the campaign trail “soon” for Joe Biden, his former vice president — a move that could help animate Democrats as the presidential race enters its pivotal final weeks.

“President Obama plans to hit the trail soon, in addition to all the other activities he’s undertaken all year in support of electing VP Biden – as he’s said, we all have to do everything we can to win on November 3,” an aide to the former president told ABC News.”

First, it should be noted that Obama could have been campaigning for his former running mate much earlier than now.  Obama withheld his endorsement of Biden until April, when it seemed all but guaranteed that Biden was going to emerge with the nomination.  Biden did not end up finally securing the nomination until June, but at the time had a sizable lead in delegates over his other Democrat challengers.

Second, Obama was on the campaign trail for Clinton in July of 2016, a race at the time that showed Clinton all but guaranteed to win in November.  That means that Obama entered the 2016 race with campaigning months before he did now in 2020.  It makes no sense that Obama would enter this late in the game if there was not some sort of internal polling showing Biden in trouble.  If Biden were really up by 14 points nationally as some polls are trying to say, Obama wouldn’t be needed in this race. It is likely that Dems are a bit more apprehensive about their chances in three weeks and decided to bring out the “big guns” in order to attempt to push them over the finish line.  Obama still remains popular among most Democrats, more popular than Biden.

I think this shows that Dems really don’t have confidence in the polls showing them ahead.  As I have been doing analysis on the VIP side of RedState, the data is clear that it is much closer (if not in favor of Trump) in many of the states that polls show Biden with a sizable lead.
