DailyKos Purchases 25,000 Roses for Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Over the last week, readers of liberal blog DailyKos raised funds to purchase 25,000 roses for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California), of which DailyKos founder Markos Moulitsas delivered 7,000 to the Speaker’s office yesterday.

In a post titled “Join our ‘Roses for Pelosi’ effort and thank our new House speaker for her incredible leadership!” the DailyKos stated that it wanted to fill Pelosi’s office with “a tangible, physical sign of our deep gratitude and appreciation for her strong leadership of our House caucus.”

Political worship to this extent is weird and inappropriate — particularly considering Moulitsas conducted an interview with Pelosi after the rose delivery.

Furthermore, what a waste of money. Nancy Pelosi has a net worth of more than $25 million. Instead of roses for a multi-millionaire, how many meals for the hungry could have been purchased instead or how many people could have been clothed with warm attire for the winter? Just imagine how many real-life people could have benefited from that money instead.

At least Pelosi donated most of the flowers to Walter Reed Hospital, which she also did the last time DailyKos delivered flowers to her. That was a smart and genuinely kind move on her part, and hopefully the flowers bring cheer and joy to the folks at the hospital.

One oddity: On the DailyKos post, it says, “Each rose is $3.33, so you don’t have to give much to be part of this fun, positive gesture!” The post and the donation page both refer to “three roses for $10,” which matches that math. However, the Washingtonian reported DailyKos “ended up sending 25,000 roses at 89 cents a stem, or $22,000.”

Meanwhile, on the donation page itself, it also says, “Your contribution will benefit Daily Kos.”

That’s some fundraiser.
