The Liberal Media Is Still Siding With Bill Clinton Against Monica Lewinsky

Some things never change. All the most earnest #MeToo campaigns with their clever hashtags and fancy graphics don’t mean that liberals truly have any interest in siding with female victims of harassment and abuse if the man is someone who is useful to them politically. The latest example of this comes from tweets posted by Monica Lewinsky earlier today, describing how a magazine outlet tossed her aside in favor of former President Bill Clinton.

According to Lewinsky’s tweets, she was invited to an event “about social change” and accepted the invitation, but was then uninvited after Clinton “decided to attend/was invited.” Lewinsky also scoffed at the magazine’s “insulting” offer to publish an article of hers.

Huffington Post just broke the news that the magazine and event in question was Town & Country’s annual philanthropic summit, which was held today. Clinton was in attendance to introduce Emma Gonzalez, one of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students who has become a prominent gun control advocate since the shooting at her school on February 14.

When news broke in 1998 of Lewinsky’s affair with Clinton while she was a White House intern, she was vilified by Democrats and the media. Now 44, she never married and has stated that the attention from the scandal has made both personal relationships and her efforts to find lasting work difficult, and she was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Lewinsky has rebranded herself in recent years as an anti-bullying advocate, and found new encouragement with the #MeToo movement. In a piece for Vanity Fair earlier this year, she explained that although her relationship with Clinton was consensual, because he was 27 years older and was significantly more powerful than she was, the relationship still constituted an “abuse of power” by Clinton.

And it should be noted that many of the #MeToo stories that have emerged have exhibited a similar abuse of power dynamic — the man in question is rich, famous, and powerful in his particular industry or company, and seeks to take advantage of the attractive women around him.

In fact, one of the main themes of this #MeToo movement was allegedly to give power to women who had previously felt powerless, to support the voices that had previously been silenced.

There were even several articles examining the idea of a twenty-years-too-late reckoning for Bill Clinton. As Matt Lewis wrote for The Daily Beast:

What are the lessons Clinton taught us? The first one is obvious: that you can get away with it if you’re a celebrity.

The second one is a sense of entitlement—that interns are the spoils of victory for a successful and virile alpha male.

But, as Lewis also noted, “having the right politics (specifically, favoring abortion rights and feminism) covered a multitude of sins.”

Betty Friedan, the author of The Feminist Mystique and the National Organization for Women’s first President, infamously dismissed the Lewinsky scandal as Clinton’s “enemies…attempting to bring him down through allegations about some dalliance with an intern,” and said that “[w]hether it’s a fantasy, a set-up, or true, I simply don’t care.”

Another feminist writer, Nina Burleigh, went even further and said, “I would be happy to give [Bill Clinton] a blowjob just to thank him for keeping abortion legal. I think American women should be lining up with their presidential kneepads on to show their gratitude for keeping the theocracy off our backs.”

Twenty years later, the liberal media is proving they would rather line up with their kneepads to fawn over Bill Clinton than to support the woman he victimized. Pathetic.

UPDATE: As journalist Yashar Ali noted, this insult to Lewinsky was completely Town & Country’s fault, not Clinton’s:

And whoever is running Town & Country’s social media feeds seems perfectly content to proudly wave their hypocrisy and “hilarious obliviousness,” as my RedState colleague Brad Slager put it, for all to see:
