Churchianity, Christianity, Kim Davis and The 2016 Primary Race

What Jesus Did About CHurchianity
What Jesus Did About CHurchianity

So Reverend Mike Huckabee !AND ONLY! Reverend Mike Huckabee was there to save Kim Davis. He came to make the evil pharaoh, Governor Brashear let his people go. When [mc_name name=’Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’C001098′ ] showed up for the revival, that was one High Priest too many.

When Mr. Cruz, who met with Ms. Davis, exited the Carter County Detention Center, a throng of journalists beckoned him toward their microphones, but an aide to Mr. Huckabee blocked the path of the senator, who appeared incredulous.

This was truly pathetic. Neither Senator Cruz nor Governor Huckabee cared a fig whether Kim Davis lived to see her next birthday. Now granted, neither man was as virulently insane as Michael Brendon Dougherty of The Week who treated us to his best impersonation of Cotton Mather. Some claim he tried for sarcasm and missed. I still totally dare him to suggest we do that to some Imam.

The conclusion is obvious. Any normal punishment rewards her with the comfort of solidarity from right-wing Christians, or her own sense of moral self-approval. Therefore the only way to avoid granting her such “martyrdom” is to actually martyr her. That’s the really perverse thing about Christians who make a spectacle like this. The only way the state can really punish them is to inform them that their suffering is meaningless and proving that God doesn’t exist by sending them to the darkness of oblivion in torment. Justice Kennedy has issued his theological bull; let Kentucky officials in defiance of it be put on a pyre. When the smoke settles there will be no GoFundMe campaign, save perhaps for a small carbon offset.

Now nobody other than the idiot at The Week who hired Michael Brendon Dougherty deserves to get treated like a Kingsford Briquette on the 4th of July. However I do find the all the supposed Christians here to be badly at fault. They are representing the faith almost as poorly as Michael Brendon Dougherty is representing his over-educated, conceited and condescending agnosticism. We begin with the woman being dubbed perhaps prematurely Kim of Arc. I totally agree with this polemic against her behavior as a Christian.

I think if Kim Davis was really interested in being true to her faith, and was really committed to sacrificing for it, she would have quietly resigned from her $80,000 a year position (Her profound faith in Christ would include the doctrine that he provides for and cares for his own, especially when they have sacrificed a great deal out of devotion to him.) If she could no longer perform the duties she agreed to because of conflict with her religious beliefs, she could have also quietly waited to be fired.

Then we move on to the dueling prima donnas, Senator Cruz and Governor Huckabee. If these people really supported anything other than their own presidential ambitions, they could have shared the stage. This could have been worked out cordially in advance. Appearances look terrible for poor, poor Mike Huckabee. They should look terrible. It’s good to see his hypocrisy make it to the newspapers before anyone is foolish enough to waste a vote on the man.

However, let’s not assume Ted Cruz was totally innocent. He knows how this game is played and he knew he could provoke the stupid from Huckabee’s camp. He did this to posterize Huckabee as Jack-Ass of The Week. It was a calculated chess move. Ted Cruz is not a legitimately aggrieved party here.

What this puts on very sad display is the difference between Churchianity and Christianity. It is the difference between self-interested public displays of faith and legitimate desire to change the world for the better through the proselytization of The Word. Jesus explains the difference between the two in Matthew 6 far better than I could.

Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. 5And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
