David Frum has descended further into deluded, smug surrealism. That occurs in anyone who thinks like Leftist, acts like a Leftist, feels like a Leftist but insists athwart reason and logic that she or he is quite the Conservative. Such is the case with Mr. Frum’s attempt to “Conservatively” agree with US Attorney General Eric Holder that America truly is a nation of cowards.

In a CNN Column entitled Fear drives opposition to gun control Mr. Frum initiates by accidentally making an intelligent statement. Here he sees the world as it truly is and should be.

There will be no new gun laws after the Aurora shooting for the basic reason that the American people do not want them. Over the past 20 years, support for gun control has collapsed in the United States.

The quote cited above falls regrettably short of the requisite number of words necessary to complete an editorial. Mr. Frum soon deviates from the path of truth. He rides forth manfully into a heap of fetid, reeking PC dung.

Only one-fifth of young Americans own a gun; one-third of over-50 Americans do. Republicans are twice as likely to own a gun as Democrats. Maybe not so coincidentally, Republicans are more likely to watch the scariest news channel of them all:(my emphasis) Fox. Whites are twice as likely to own a gun as nonwhites — and it may also not be a coincidence that gun purchases have suddenly spiked since November 2008.

Fox has many problems that keep it from perfection. They promote yelling loudmouths and throw lots of eye-candy up on the screen that has no informational content whatsoever. These are fair criticisms, but only in the context of what other networks offer in comparison.

Nobody at Fox News would get the name of a suspect in a mass shooting, Google the website of an organization they politically opposed, find a name that matched and then commence slandering. You need the high moral standards of George Stephanopoulos and ABC “News” to go do that. Here’s how networks that David Frum deem non-scary report the news.

Stephanolpoulos: I’m going to go to Brian Ross. You’ve been investigating the background of Jim Holmes here. You found something that might be significant.
Ross: There’s a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado, page on the Colorado Tea party site as well, talking about him joining the Tea Party last year. Now, we don’t know if this is the same Jim Holmes. But it’s Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado.
Stephanolpoulos: Okay, we’ll keep looking at that. Brian Ross, thanks very much.

In the end, any rational American examining the current trajectory of our society should be frightened. Our societal bedrocks such as the news media lie to us all on a daily basis. Does this form a logical syllogism in support of firearm ownership? My honest answer would be “I don’t know.” I sincerely vacillate on the subject.

That occurs because despite the danger of gun ownership and firearms mishaps; I totally get why people feel safer armed. Memo to David Frum: it has nothing to do with games of “Knock-Out King” gone awry. It has to do with the fundamental trustworthiness and decency of our society and its government.

Authority is not something that people should just blindly trust. Anyone telling you otherwise has never served a day in the military or found themselves on the business end of an IG complaint or an IRS audit. The game is not played fairly and never has been.

Does owning a firearm make it more even? I’m not sure, but contra David Frum, I sure haven’t seen anything to factually convince me that such isn’t the case. I withhold judgment and won’t be calling all gun owners cowards in a peak of baronial arrogance. Sometimes frightened people are accurately interpreting what their five senses are telling them about the environment that surrounds them.
