It’s not all that rare for sitting Supreme Court justices to speak out on issues but I cannot remember a time when a justice flat out blasted a president for comments he made about the judiciary.
President Trump scoffed at the judge who held up his order on ending asylum by calling him an “Obama judge,” implying that it was nothing but politics that drove the decision. Chief Justice John Roberts of the Supreme Court was having none of it:
“We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges. What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them. That independent judiciary is somethng we should be thankful for.”
Of course, as we know, Trump cannot take a grain of criticism without lashing out (his supporters call it “punching back” despite him looking more like a drunk trying to land a punch against a prizefighter), so I suspect we shall see something from him on Twitter relatively soon. He’ll probably say something about Roberts Obamacare decision.
