The president is usually done watching Fox News by the time Martha MacCallum’s show airs in the evening, but if he had, he would’ve seen one of his own supporters in the House of Representative’s, House Oversight Committee chairman Trey Gowdy, debunk Trump’s latest conspiracy, that the FBI embedded a spy in his campaign.
Gowdy told MacCallum:
“President Trump himself in the Comey memos said if anyone connected with my campaign was working with Russia, I want you to investigate it, and it sounds to me like that is exactly what the FBI did. I think when the president finds out what happened, he is going to be not just fine, he is going to be glad that we have an FBI that took seriously what they heard.”
“I am even more convinced that the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got, and that it has nothing to do with Donald Trump.”
When asked whether the president’s tweets on the Russia investigation are problematic, Gowdy said any of Trump’s comments are fair game for questioning by special counsel Robert Mueller. He also thinks Trump should sit down with Mueller “if he’s done nothing wrong.”
He also thinks Trump should sit down with Mueller “if he’s done nothing wrong.” I can’t say I agree with this, as the president has a penchant for rewriting events — also known as lying — to make himself look good and that could get him in hot water when talking to a federal agent.
Gowdy also had some sage advice for the president. “If I were his lawyer, and I never will be, I would tell him to rely on his lawyers and his comms folks,” he said.
It’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not Trump will heed it.
