A German tennis player and her coach are essentially freaking out over the fact that an old, Nazi-era verse of the German national anthem was included when an American opera singer from Hawaii sang “Das Deutschlandlied” at the Fed Cup over the weekend.

German tennis player Andrea Petkovic had this to say about the incident.

“I thought it was the epitome of ignorance, and I’ve never felt more disrespected in my whole life, let alone in Fed Cup, and I’ve played Fed Cup for 13 years now,” Petkovic told the Associated Press. “It is the worst thing that has ever happened to me.”

Um, okay. How awesome is your life that having an obsolete verse of a song performed is “the worst thing that has ever happened” to you. Get a grip.

The offending verse included the words ““Deutschland, Deutschland ueber alles,” which means Germany, Germany above all else.

Are you appropriately scandalized?

The singer was American. Was he likely a bit ignorant about the German national anthem? Uh, yeah. American singers get the lyrics to their own national anthem wrong all the time. No one was trying to push or advocate for German-style national socialism of the Hitler-era.

It was an error. The U.S. Tennis Association has apologized for the incident. The hyperbole, however, is overmuch.
