Data Analyst: New Numbers Give Clear 'Warning Sign' for Dems Ahead of 2026 Midterms

Democrats think they're going to cruise to victory in the 2026 midterms in the race for the House of Representatives.

But they're not going to be happy with the data that CNN senior data analyst Harry Enten had to offer up on Monday as we get closer to the midterms.

It's historically common for the party out of power - in this case, the Democrats - to be leading in the polling numbers, and they are. But the numbers may not be enough for them, and the warning signs are clear, as Enten explained.

He detailed how there were "high-quality polls (Ipsos, MU Law, & NBC)" which showed Democrats "shy of their generic ballot benchmark in past wave years." From double digits in prior years, to now, in 2026, they are only up 5 points according to one NBC News poll, which was half of what they had in 2018 in the same poll, and less than half of what they had in 2006.

Those numbers do not include redistricting. Enten explained that in order for Democrats to regain control, he estimates they would need a 3 to 4 point lead. Yet the average of those three polls - Ipsos, MU Law, and NBC - is only 3. So that's leaving them potentially even. "Far from a guarantee," Enten termed it.

The Kalshi prediction market was still tilting Republicans for the House, but had Republicans up in the race for the Senate.

Not only doesn't that sound like a wave for Democrats, but it sounds like a real shot for Republicans. And this is before the Iran deal. Now with the deal, the gas prices are likely to really dive back down to where President Donald Trump had them before Operation Epic Fury. We're already seeing the oil prices dropping. Then other things are likely to settle back down as well when world shipping returns to normal. That should also have a positive effect on inflation.

On top of that, the Republicans have built up a big war chest to help drive home the message of how extreme the Democrats are, although to be frank, they may not need that. Americans have already seen that the Dems will push all kinds of radical positions and people to get power, including with Senate nominees like Graham Platner in Maine and James Talarico in Texas.

Republicans need to pound that message home - all they have to do is show what the Democrats have been saying and doing, how badly their actions have hurt America in the past, and how harmful their policies would be for the American people.
