Vance Goes Scorched Earth on How Asylum Was Misused Under Biden

Vice President JD Vance was driving the left a bit crazy with the point he was making about asylum claims during an exchange on X with Democratic Rep. Seth Magaziner (RI-2).

The conversation revolved around the case of the five-year-old boy Liam Ramos. As we reported, the media claimed the child had been detained by ICE, as though the child was being targeted. In fact, as DHS explained, when they went to pick up his father, the father fled. So they weren't going to leave the child out in the cold, and when they got the father, the child was kept with the father. But the media had no shame when they were pushing their narrative.

Some more of the backstory:

Representatives for Liam and his father said the family is from Ecuador and that they entered the U.S. in 2024 under a now-defunct Biden-era system that allowed asylum-seekers to use a phone app to schedule an appointment to be processed at an official border entry.
The DHS, which oversees ICE, has said that it has no record of the family using that app, formerly known as CBP One.

Rep. Magaziner repeated the claim that they "presented at a port of entry, requested asylum and were waiting for their hearing" while not mentioning what DHS said about the case.

Then Vice President Vance just went to town on the broader point of how asylum was misused under Biden, and how that essentially translated to an open border.

This reminds me of when Margaret Brennan "fact checked" me at the VP debate.
If your position is that a person can claim asylum after traversing eight countries, and they are therefore "legal immigrants" because the president ignores the law and allows them to stay, then you're advocating for an open border.

Vance nuked the Biden-Harris team's use of the CBP One app, which he said allowed people to use it to claim asylum to stay indefinitely.

Bottom line? The asylum claim system under Biden was just distorted out of all reality when everyone and anyone was claiming it. Asylum has a specific meaning, and economic migrants don't qualify. There has to be a credible claim of fear, not just that you'd be better off financially in the United States. If everyone can claim it, and then it takes years for the case to be heard, then, clearly, that is a problem.

President Donald Trump stopped the CBP One app, then repurposed it to help people to self-deport.

Democrats just can't deal with the fact that the Trump-Vance team has reformed the system and secured the border.
