How twisted do you have to be to think that fighting for a picture with an illegal alien, alleged MS-13 gang member and wife abuser is a good look?
However, that was the picture that Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) got. Now, he's upset because it's not quite working out for him like he wanted. He did a press conference on Friday, and tried to justify his actions. We covered some of that already.

But he wants us to know something about the meeting. He really didn't drink the margaritas with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, he claims.

Van Hollen claims it was a set-up against him, as our sister site PJ Media reported. This is pretty funny.
Sen. @ChrisVanHollen on "Margarita Gate": "Neither of us touched the drinks that were in front of us...nobody drank any margaritas...this is the lesson in the lengths that President Bukele will do to deceive people about what's going on." pic.twitter.com/8eg3WlkU4S

“When I first sat down with Kilmar, we just had glasses of water on the table, I think maybe some coffee," he said. "And as we were talking, one of the government people came over and deposited two other glasses on the table with ice, and I don’t know if it was salt or sugar around the top."
Van Hollen continued, "But they looked like margaritas, and if you look at the one they put in front of Kilmar, it actually looked like it had a little less liquid than the one in front of me, to try to make it look, I assume, like he drank out of it."
He claimed neither of them touched the drinks.
"If you sip out of one of those glasses, some of whatever it was—salt or sugar—would disappear. You would see a gap. There’s no gap. Nobody drank any margaritas or sugar water or whatever it is.”
Is he kidding? This is one of the silliest defenses I've ever heard, made more silly by him thinking he's playing a "gotcha" here.
Sen. Van Hollen, you begged to put yourself in that position. You're the one who wanted the photo op with the guy with the unsavory background. Now, you're unhappy about the comments about it? It's all on you.
Let's think about this. Either Van Hollen was foolish enough to put sit there in a damning picture, drinking with Abrego Garcia, or he was foolish to put himself in a situation where someone put drinks on the table and he did nothing about it.
See a theme there? He doesn't get it: either way, he doesn't come out smelling good here. He thinks that he's defending himself, but his defense is essentially "I was dumb and got taken advantage of." Not a good look from a U.S. senator.
Either way, he can't get around the greater point that disturbs the American people: he appears to care more about an illegal alien with an unsavory background than actual American citizens like Rachel Morin. The drinks were just the cherry on top, literally, of his foolish exercise. It's not about the drinks, it's about his actions.
El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele retweeted people on X laughing at Van Hollen's defense. So, it looks like he found it amusing too.

There's an old saying: when you're having to explain, you're losing.
That's what's going on here with Van Hollen, as he's trying to defend the indefensible.
Editor’s Note: Thanks to President Trump, illegal immigration into our great country has virtually stopped. Despite the radical left's lies, new legislation wasn't needed to secure our border, just a new president.
