Folks on the left are freaking out over President Donald Trump's tariff positions. But as with most things that Trump does, there's a reason that the left either doesn't understand or wants to ignore because it makes sense.
I wrote a bit on this on Friday when I reported on Vice President JD Vance's trip to Michigan to speak at Vantage Plastics. Vance explained that part of the reason for them is that we're already facing big tariffs from some of these countries, or have watched them block our products, without having leadership that has been reciprocal in response.
Basically, he argues, we're being taken advantage of and we need to bring manufacturing back.
Just think about this. When foreign countries make it impossible to ship American cars into their countries, why have we had leadership that refuses to fight back?
When we have foreign countries that use slave labor that undercuts the wages of American workers, why have we had American leadership that has refused to fight back?
When you let literal slaves make stuff cheaply and then bring it into our country, we all know -- you all know that destroys the wages of American workers.
JD Vance torches the media for their malicious reporting on Trump:

And so, now we have an American media that says, “How dare Donald Trump stand up for the American worker.” I think I speak for the American worker when I say, “Thank God for President Trump for finally standing up for the American worker.”

Journalist Batya Ungar-Sargon laid out some of this during an appearance on Bill Maher's "Real Time" show. Maher asked her if she regretted her support for President Trump, saying "This is going badly." She just leveled him in response. Among the things she liked about Trump was how he was looking at manufacturing that we shouldn't be shipping manufacturing jobs overseas and bringing in millions of illegal aliens to sell out the working class.
Batya Ungar-Sargon stuns Bill Maher into submission when talking about Trump's rationale on tariffs:

"The 70s... the largest share of our GDP was in the middle class," she said. "Now the top 20 percent controls over 50 percent of the GDP. That manufacturing is still being done: It's just being done in other countries."
Maher replied, "For wages we will not work for."
Ungar-Sargon then dropped the hammer.
"That's what the tariffs are for. They are to make American workers more competitive in the global market. Why are we accepting that there should be a race to the bottom?"
China: What is its competitive advantage over us? It's that they pay slave wages. [....]
It's important that we have a stake in the manufacturing of the things that we need as a nation, so that when China goes to war against us we're not relying on them for steel and aluminum in order to fight them."
Maher had to acknowledge that "at least that was an answer." Indeed. But the media doesn't want to report on that, to at least have an honest discussion about pros and cons.
Bottom line that Vance was also making in Michigan? We need the manufacturing to come back if we want that strong middle class. Joe Biden was always talking about supporting the middle class and the worker, but he and the Democrats were always doing everything to undercut them.
