In the wake of two assassination attempts against former President Donald Trump, you have to be on edge when you hear things like the "suspicious occurrence" that occurred hours before his Long Island rally on Wednesday. It's still not clear exactly what was going on with that report, although the local law enforcement determined there was no threat to Trump.
But the two assassination attempts are concerning. Plus, they've exposed a big problem in the way that the Secret Service was protecting him, and the issues don't appear to have been resolved. As Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) explained, he's received more information from whistleblowers about the second incident. They said that protocol would have required a sweep of the perimeter and putting agents in the areas of vulnerability around the golf course; they'd guarded that golf course many times and done that before. Yet, it doesn't appear to have been done this time, or the suspect wouldn't have been able to camp out there for 12 hours. And how did the suspect know that Trump would be there when his schedule for that wasn't public?

'Suspicious Occurrence' Reported Near Planned Trump Rally in New York (Updated)
But if all that wasn't raising enough questions and concerns, now there's more.
Some of the people who attended a rally for Trump and who were sitting behind him to the right of the stage in Tucson, Arizona, on September 12 have reported mysterious symptoms, chiefly affecting their eyes. Some reported swelling in their faces. It involved Latino supporters who were on that side. According to 12 News, almost a dozen people were affected, and some had to go to the hospital.
Here's another report from News 4 Tucson Investigators.
Trump supporter Mayra Rodriguez described having to go to the hospital after leaving the rally.
“The emergency room staff, from the triage nurse to the PA [Physicians Assistant] asked are you sure you didn’t get sprayed with something your symptoms look like you got sprayed with something," she said.
The N4T Investigators spoke with her on Friday the morning after the event, she was nearly blind.
“I can’t see anything when I try to open my eyes. I see a bright light. It hurts, it hurts a lot to open my eyes. I have this cold cloth I put on and take off constantly. It's horrible," she explained.
Her vision started to improve on Tuesday. She said the doctors weren't sure what it was.
A brother and sister, as well as a local realtor, were affected as well.
“It kept getting worse and worse, my eyes were watering a lot, my nose started running then I started feeling my face get really flushed and my neck felt like it was on fire and it just progressed from there," the sister said.
Her brother told us, “It was all focused on my eyes, my eyes were red like hell you know, it's unbearable. I couldn’t handle it.”
The other supporters who did not agree to on camera told us about very similar injuries. One woman who is a local realtor said she had to cancel all her showings over the weekend because she couldn't see well.
Kathleen Winn is a former Congressional candidate who was seated on the other side of the stage, and they had no problems there. She expressed concern, wondering if there was anything deliberate in all this and whether there were "nefarious actors" involved in this.
It's not clear what the problem was or if anyone caused it deliberately. But obviously, given everything that has been going on and the animosity that some direct against Trump and supporters, you have to consider the possibility. I'd like to hear from the doctors if they had any further sense of what went on, but it does sound like they were exposed to something.
The Trump campaign issued a statement saying they were investigating.
"The Trump campaign has been collecting information. We remain committed to the countless patriots that attend our high-energy, high-impact rallies across the country.”
The Secret Service said they didn't know of any threat to Trump.
