As we reported on Wednesday, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) violated all kinds of precedent by refusing to hold the impeachment trial of DHS head Alejandro Mayorkas after he had been impeached in the House. Schumer, for the first time in history, refused to pursue the matter.
Republicans, including Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), ripped Schumer to shreds for his failure to adhere to the Constitution.

Schumer took to X to plead his case for tossing the Constitution under the bus and it did not go well.
The GOP proved this whole impeachment was a political show.

We offered times to have an open debate and votes on multiple resolutions offered by the GOP.
They denied our fair and reasonable offer.
No, you didn't take up the trial. You have no excuse.
Then he went there with a tweet that got ratioed into next week for its raging hypocrisy.
Impeachment should NEVER be used to settle policy disagreements.

Oh, my, is he joking? They had no high crimes and misdemeanors when they pursued Trump. They wanted to impeach him even before he got into office. It would be harder to find something — anything — more hypocritical than this post from Chuck.
Eric Schmitt spoke for many in response and pointed out how the Democrats were going to regret this move.
Is this a parody account?

You own this. 100 years from now people will lament how you handled this and how you diminished the Senate.
You set fire to our Constitutional & bulldozed 200 years of precedent in just one afternoon.
And you’ll regret it sooner than you think. https://t.co/ttrtgCLgPX
Just remember, Chuck, when next you try to impeach President Donald Trump after he gets reelected, it will just be tabled. Your rules. This is the door that Democrats opened. Once again, as they attack Republicans, it is they who are violating and destroying all norms of how our system operates in a craven attempt to hold onto their own power.
Not enforcing the law and allowing people to flood across the border is not a "policy disagreement" — it's a failure to defend the United States, the most basic obligation of the administration.
Facilitating, funding, and coordinating the invasion of more illegals into our country than the population of 36 states in just over 3 years isn’t a policy disagreement.

It’s an act of treason. https://t.co/WuTQ6tC7Zm
Then Chuck tried a little more spin, trying to blame Republicans for the border problem that Joe Biden and Mayorkas created.
If the GOP spent a FRACTION of the effort they spent on this meritless impeachment towards working with Democrats on border reform, we might have passed the bipartisan border bill.
— Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) April 17, 2024
But Trump told his GOP allies in Congress to kill it.
Trump even said: “Please, blame it on me.”
The problem is that Americans know who's at fault for the border problem because they can trace it back to when it went off the rails — after Biden came in and trashed all the measures that Trump had put in place with executive orders.
You are the Adam Schiff of the Senate

The bill Schumer is talking about wouldn't make the border more secure, and that's why the GOP wasn't for it — but has been for real border security for all the years now that Biden and Mayorkas have done nothing but make the problem worse.
