Ke Huy Quan Lights up the Golden Globes With Heartwarming Acceptance Speech

You likely know who Ke Huy Quan is. Even if you don’t remember his name, you likely saw his most well-known role, as “Short Round” in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.”

But it’s a challenging thing to have your most well-known role be as a kid, 38 years later, if you want to be a working actor. After finding roles rather thin, he went off into other areas of the business including production for about 20 years, returning to acting in 2018.

So when Quan was nominated and then won a Golden Globe for his role as Waymond Wang in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” it was very touching for him, and the speech that he delivered just lit up the room, because it was so honest and he was so happy.

“I was raised to never forget where I came from and to always remember who gave me my first opportunity,” Quan told the other actors. “I am so happy to see Steven Spielberg here tonight. Steven, thank you!”

Quan said when he started his career as a child actor in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” he felt “so very lucky” to be cast in such a great role. But then, “As I grew older, I started to wonder if that was it — if that was just luck. For so many years, I was afraid I had nothing more to offer, uh, that no matter what I did, I would never surpass what I’d achieved as a kid.”

“Thankfully,” Quan said, “more than 30 years later, two guys thought of me, they remembered that kid. And they gave me an opportunity to try again. Everything, everything that has happened since has been unbelievable. Dan Kwan, Daniel Scheinert, thank you so, so much for helping me find my answer. You have given me more than I could have ever hoped.”

He also thanked his fellow actors including Jamie Lee Curtis and Michelle Yeoh, who won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her role as his wife in the film.

“Last but not least,” Quan said trembling with emotion.”I want to thank the most important person in my life, the one person that never stopped believing in me, my wife, Echo, I love you with all of my heart! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

We wrote a little bit about the movie here and here’s a clip from the movie.
